For those of you who celebrate it, hope you had a happy 4th of July.

Mine was good.  Small party, traditional lemon cake frosted up all patriotic, traditional sugar buzz WHILE frosting said cake ;), fireworks... it was all good.

Had just a day at the movies today (Die Hard 4 & Transformers) and then just sat on our deck tonight eating dinner watching everyone else in our neighborhood firing off their fireworks.

Tomarrow I head off to my parents lake house for our Annual 4th of July weekend party.. which is 3 days of family reunion mixed with BBQing and fireworks off the docks each night at night fall.

Happy July 4th for those who celebrate it!

Well this year was one of the biggest fireworks celebrations in Boston, but I skipped it. Instead I went to my friends for drinks and some great steaks (I took care of the sides, lemon pepper green beans and portobellos stuffed with portugese cheese and sausage).

I felt a little pang of guilt for missing out on the show but lucky me lives in the projects with a LOT of my fellow hispanics, so there where plenty of rather impressive illegal fireworks flying around. Sure, it's not professional or safe but still very cool.

El Condor

Well, Lugaru, at least you avoided getting rained upon, unlike the poor, teeming masses on the Esplanade.  :D

I spent the day prepping the cookout, as La SeƱora was busy earning time-and-a-half.  Ribs, chicken, corn-on-the-cob, etc.  Had the family over and it was delightful - I didn't even burn anything!  Then we sat in the living room and watched the crowd get drenched by driving rain at the Boston Pops concert. Woo-hoo!

The day itself wasn't great for me.  My car broke down the day before, I spent over $200 towing it home, and I can't afford to get it fixed.  The good news is that the small dealership I got it from is right down the street, and they've promised to sent a mechanic down to look at it and hopefully they can either help me fix it or get a new(er) car.

But that in no way detracts from the importance of the day and the way I feel about this country.  I am American by birth and heritage.  My ancestors on my dad's side came to this country between the War for Independence and the Civil War.  The son of the first one here fought in that war, and was wounded in battle.  (although I must admit the wound itself is rather suspicious)

But I myself grew up in a missionary family.  I lived in Asian most of my life until the age of 19.  Asia's a nice place, don't get me wrong, but living there makes me appreciate this country more.

We live in a country where the poor have, for the most part, food to eat and somewhere to live, and usually a television or two.

We live in a country where those from the worst circumstances can work themselves up.  My partner at work came from a bad neighborhood and circumstances, but he got out of there just by deciding that's not what he wanted in life.

We live in a country where we still have freedom.  We don't have people threatening to cut off a person's limbs because they converted to another religion.  Or at least, such things aren't done in the open by prominent members of said religion.  (This sort of thing did happen where I grew up.  A lot.)

We live in a country where man helps his fellow man.  Americans give far more of their money to help other men than any other country on earth.

And yes, there are other great countries, and those of you from those countries of undoubtedly proud of them and their history too, but I am proud to be called an American.

Revenant

I had to work.. yesterday AND today.

But the good news is, my friend and I just signed the lease for a beautiful new apartment and we are able to start moving in now.  Its a huge 2 bedroom, a nice change from the tiny studios we both have now.  We work together and have known each other for about a year..

Midnight

I worked too (Monday thru today) at a private to-do down on the coast. Teched for Suzy Bogguss and for Grucci Fireworks, which was both cool and fun. No real celebration (by the time I got off work last night at nearly 2 am) but I'm sure America will forgive me. ;)
