D'oh! It sounded so much like a real name that I didn't realize what you were doing there.

I think the JL: NF movie looks pretty cool. This is the same trailer that is on the Superman: Doomsday movie, which left me pretty psyched.

Dr.Volt

Yeah, saw that by chance at DC's site yesterday.  Sweetness.

I really enjoyed reading Darwyn Cooper's series as TPBs (I LOVE my local library!).  It captures well the innonence and idealism and yet the challenges of the Silver Age (set right before the Kennedy Administration, US).  And this DVD looks like it does a good job carrying the same art style and feel of the comic book series.

Agreed, Lawless will be great as WW, Kyle Maclachlan as Supes will be just fine I'm sure, and though I'm not familar with the fellow who is slated to do the voice of Bats I'm certain he'll be great as well.

I'll probably pick up a copy of the DVD when it comes out.

I'm not too crazy about him becoming just the guy who makes the lecherous comments and eats food and makes the corny jokes.

The New Frontier Flash is Barry, not Wally, so there shouldn't be any womanizing or adolescent humor. He has some great moments in the comic (including a neato battle with Captain Cold) -- hopefully some of that will make it into the DVD.

Midnite

Just finished watching JL: The New Frontier. Umm.. not going to say where I got it.

Anyways the animation was pretty impressive, it blows Marvel's direct to DVDs animation out of the water. It was way better than Superman: Doomsday. Story was well written, even though they cut a few things out from the graphic novel, the pacing was great. Kinda focused on GL alot, which I didn't mind.

The VAs were really good, Lucy was born to play Wonderwoman. Whoever voiced Superman puts Mr. Baldwin to shame. I didn't mind the VA for Batman, but everyone knows that Kevin Conroy has the best Batman voice ever!  :P

Here's my rating:

Story: 4/5
Animation: 5/5
VAs: 4.5/5

Going to pick up this baby when it hit stores. Can't wait for Teen Titans and Gotham Knights. DC owns Marvel in the DTV department.

Animation and voice acting were great, my only grief is that most of the first issue is merely shown in the opening credits (Hourman's death, the disbanding of the Justice Society and so on), John Henry's bits were only mentioned towards the end and even that was interrupted by the Flash's good-bye speech and the fight with Wildcat with some of the members of the Justice Society watching wasn't included either, only a few seconds of showing Wildcat in his boxing shorts and gloves. Also, Taskforce X disappeared and the bits about that guy not wanting Hal up in the space-ship because it could get Hal killed were removed.

But, despite all that, it was still a great story and a decent movie.

Oh, and one final thing: "HAWK-AAA!"  :D

Me too, but I knew I'd buy it regardless of when it came out. We had something of a movoe marathon, watching Superman: Doomsday, JL: NF, andf marvel's Dr. Strange, in that order.
Wow, Midnite is right on the money, watching doc strange afterwards was downright painful. I would love for NF to be akin to a pilot episode of a silver age JLA series grounded in history.

It was very well done. The voices were excellent, but not distractingly familiar. Anyone could quibble about this or that bit of history or power use, but I thought the overall characterizations were excellent. I easily could have been reading a classic back issue from that era, except better, since this was written for a more mature audience than were comics of the time. I echo the desire for a silver-age series based on the merits of this feature.

I also thought this movie was pretty well done even though I have no real knowledge of the series it's based on. However, it did make me want to read it just to compare/contrast so if they were shooting for that, then they succeeded. It would be nice if a silver age toon was made, but I don't really think it'd catch on with the current generation of kids and they'd really have to tone down the violence/language for it to happen.

Dr.Volt

Hey, so where did you guys find copies of this DVD????  Every where I look it says that it hasn't been released yet (at least not in the US).

There are preavailable copies floating around and I've even managed to snag it myself in the last few days.

I'm totally in agreement that DC/Warner should make a JLA series extending from this movie because the voices, designs, and dialogue were spot on. Plus I had that same feeling in my gut that I had watching Bruce Timm's Batman, Superman, and Justice League cartoons which kept me glued to my seat and wanting to see more.

Part of me liked this much more than the previous Timmverse, because of Lucy Lawless as Wonder Woman the harder edge that you couldn't really get away with in a kid's show.  In particular, I loved Lucy Lawless as Wonder Woman the way Martian Manhunter was portrayed when he had the gumshoe disguise, and the fact more than half the movie was the characterization of the heroes.  Also, the fanboy in me squeed at Lucy Lawless as Wonder Woman Hal Jordan as the Green Lantern and Barry Allen as The Flash.

stumpy

Bwahahaha.

I liked those things, too. I was even a little surprised by how easily I bought Lucy Lawless as Diana. I mean, given her acting credits, she's a natural for that type of role, but I was worried that the flinty quality to her voice might be distracting. But it never bothered me. And, I think the DVD outtakes of her in the recording booth show the enthusiasm that she brought to the part. Frankly, I enjoyed all of the voice acting, including Brooke Shields as Carol Ferris, Kyra Sedgwick as Lois Lane, and Vicki Lewis (the girl from News Radio) as Iris West.

I didn't like it that much.  Maybe because I didn't the book before hand.  I like the way Wonder woman was done (she's slightly taller than Supes).  I didn't like the VA for Batman and the Martian Manhunter was nothing I expected.
What I did like was The flash & Green Lantern.  They were done great.

stumpy

Actually, I was wondering about that, too. How tall is Wonder Woman supposed to be now? At one point, she was listed at 5'11". Is she 6'3" or something these days? I recall reading at one point that Clark is 6'2" (though I also thought he was 6'3"), so that would make sense from this movie.

Does she ever use a secret ID? It would be pretty tough if she were that tall. I mean, 6'3" isn't that tall for a guy, but a woman that tall is going to be noticed. One girlfriend of mine was 6'2" and it was not easy for her to blend into a crowd.

detourne_me

easily one of the best JLA adaptions done, and this movie was great, i too would like to see a spin-off.  but i think it would cost a bit too much....   Neil Patrick Harris, Brooke Shields, and David Borneaz might sound cheap, but they're probably a bit more expensivve than the regular voice actors...  even Kevin Conroy (i hope thats his name)

but yeah, this was great,  i can tell that the flick has inspired Revenant with his skins,  I really wish DC would make a Spirit movie based on Darwyn Cookes work too.

yell0w_lantern

Sounds promising. I just can't imagine NPH as the voice of a superhero.

Mr. Hamrick

when did Wonder Woman go from 5'11" to 6'2" or 6'3"?

stumpy

I wish I knew. I read on a comics forum a long time ago that the artist working on the book at the time (this must have been '05 or so) considered her to be 6'2" - 6'3", according to an interview in Wizard magazine or some such. I never checked into it. I think the Who's Who site still has her at 5'11". But, if she is being portrayed as taller than Clark or Bruce, then she has to be well over 6'...

To be perfectly honest, 5'11" would be fine. That's already taller than 99.4% of women (in the U.S., ages 18-24). That's already statistically equivalent to a male who is 6'5". To my thinking, it's important that she's noticeably tall, but it isn't necessary that she be in the upper 0.001% of the population.

BUMP!

This will be airing on cartoon network. Tomorrow. 9 pm E/T. So go catch it if you haven't seen it.

I noticed the station barely advertised this (but they advertised the heck out of star wars), so I wanted to get the word out there since I kinda forgot about them airing Gotham Knights 2 weeks ago.  <_<
