This show is having a great (if uneven) season so far.   Helen Slater, the old Supergirl from the movies, was outstanding as Kal-el's Mom, Lara.   And for us old folks, I could believe how fantastic she looked.   She must be in her mid- to late-forties (maybe even 50), and still has a great figure.  Kara's story was compelling.   And the show was able to put a real fresh coat of paint on the whole storytelling concept of the Flashback.  Man, was Jor-el's brother a sleeze.

From the coming attractions, I fear for another "one great episode, followed by a lamer episode" pattern that seems to be developing this season ... as Lana gets superpowers next week.   But then the week after, I understand it's back to Helen Slater and Lara, and I'm really looking forward to that.

I agree, it was a good episode, and fans may finally be able to forgive Hellen Slater for that Supergirl movie.

Brainiac is back!  Or at least on his way back.

And the episode at least is important as far as the general storyline goes, even if the basic premise isn't even remotely original.

Another good episode, wit the missing Luthor storyline picked back up, the Zor-El one finished, and Clark about to be punished by Jor-El, whatever that means.

AncientSpirit

I liked it, too ... except for the "punishment" ending.  Haven't we been here before?

And given the last time Clark "defied" Jor-el, didn't Johnathan die?   If my daddy killed my beloved foster father, I'm not sure I'd be coming home so often for more.

And I sill don't understand blue kryptonite.   In the Silver age, it was green kryptonite to Bizarros but had no effect on kryptonians.   (Gold K robbed the powers, but that was permanent.)   However, I have no problem buying that in the Smalleville universe it temporarily removes kryptonian superpowers.   What troubled me throw was why Clark couldn't get the ring off.

He tried sawing if off.   Duh!   How do you saw through metal from krypton?   By why didn't Clark try using SOAP?   Or Vasaline?   Even if Clark doesn't know how we mere mortals deal with tight rings, Chloe was there to advise him.

The bit with Lex and the editor of the Daily Planet was cool.  But it did leave me wondering about past story lines that revolved around Lex and his family.  So is this a problem with continuity?   An outright mistake?  Or is my ancient memory playing tricks on me?

And how dumb could Clark be thinking Kara would turn on her father, when at the exact same time he's thinking that he'll do anything for his Mom?

(Despite all this, I enjoyed the episode.   No, really.)

One last, last thought:   Now that Clark has seen Kara and Zor-el fly, he must realize that sooner or later he'll be able to fly.   So why isn't he experimenting with it?   (Especially since he was floating in his sleep during an earlier season.) Should we be seeing at least one episode where he tries?   Or asks Kara about her first time (and by first time, I mean flying)?   You think by this time he'd be curious at the least.

So, how long has Lana known about Clark's secret?

Lana and Clark made the earth move....hahahahahahaha!!!!!  No wonder Chloe is jealous.  When does anyone in the show actually....go to class?

In the past, they have mentioned that Lionel had an illegitimate son which he quietly and forcefully got the mother to send off to adoption, then buried it so no one would know.  This was discovered in Season 2 when the mother thought Clark was her missing son and tried to kidnap him and force him to be her son and force Lionel to publicly recognize Clark as such.  The real identity of the missing son was never revealed, although Lex seemed to want to find out.  I don't know if this was brought up as much since, although I think the missing Luthor has been mentioned from time to time.

Since the last episode of last season.  Although she knew about his powers the episode she married Lex, just not their origin.

Dude, that was last week's episode!  This week's was better anyway.

Hey, cut me some slack, Cat.  I have to wait for the subtitles to be added before show is aired in China.  It's even worse with Heroes since Chinese aren't too fond of Japanese.

catwhowalksbyhimself

Well, you could have mentioned it was last week instead of breaking into a discussion about a completely different episode.

That and the content of said post irritated me, for reasons that it would not be polite to state publicly.

thalaw2

I didn't know I was a week behind until now (I thought I was just a few days out of sync).  The post before mine was about Lana knowing Clark's secret...anyway...back to the topic.

Why can't Clark fly when conscious?  Is it mental?

AncientSpirit

Nope.  It's because, when they created the show seven years ago, they created one rule, "No Flights.  No tights."

That made a lot of sense to me until everyone else started flying around.   Kara in particular looks really cool taking off.   The explanation they've given for her flight ability and his lack thereof, seems to be that "girls mature faster than boys."   But their body types don't seem to bear that out.   (of course, that's only by human standards and not kryptonian ... but still, its starting to feel very forced.)

thanoson

I like how everybody that shows up on earth can use their powers better than Clark can.

Sevenforce

Heh, yeah, especially since most Kryptonians can use Heat and X-Ray Vision even though it took Clark...18? 16? years to learn it...and even once or twice he learnt some powers by accident :D

And seeing how every mother and his son is flying now...give Clark some jumper boots! Sheesh. How's he gonna fight these guys? :P

juancho

I loved last episode, the fact that the story of Kara and his father has some resemblance the Supergirl in the comics nowadays feels kinda cool.

The no flying for clark it a total pain, especially when you see him flying in the opening of each episode.

So now we have blue K too?
How many variants have we seen already? Green, Red, Black, Silver & Blue? am i missing any of them?

Sevenforce

*crosses fingers* Please no pink please no pink :banghead:

catwhowalksbyhimself

Yep, I just found out that the Feb 7 episode will feature Back Canary and the Green Arrow.  Judging by the title of the episode, she will likely have her Canary Cry.

catwhowalksbyhimself

Just saw the ad for this episode, and yes, she is wearing the fishnets and does have the canary cry.

Glitch Girl

Argh!  missed this week's!  (power failure cut off the recording)

can someone spoil it for me?

Now we have to remember that Black Canary is early in her career there... I'm sure that if she starts dating Green Arrow then her hair will probably get dyed yellowish blonde and take a more seductive look so that her alter ego can hang off Oliver Queen's arm in social events.

I just keep reminding myself that Smallville is trying to fix what Birds Of Prey had done but still come up with their own look.

Glitch Girl

Is it just me or is her look very... 80's somehow.  The combination of the hair and the mask makeup and something about the cut of the costume reminds me of MTV circa Flock of Seagulls' "I Ran".

Mr. Hamrick

a) her hair was dark blonde, more of a sandy color not black.

b) other than the eye make-up, they stayed rather dead on with the costume from what I could see in the trailer.  The eye make-up screamed Daryl Hannah in Blade Runner.

c) remember all we've seen is that one scene.  we don't know what they'll do with her the rest of the episode.

d) some of us are into goth girls, thank you.

e) I should start trying to watch Smallville, I think. (haven't since season 2)

bredon7777

Smallville is a waste of time except when they have other DC characters on.

herodad1

does anyone know when season 7 will come out on dvd?

thanoson

I really like how they use actors from past Superman shows as characters in this. Jimmy Olsen got old.

You know, I really want to give a strong counter-argument, but honestly, I think you're probably right. Smallville has had some ridiculously clumsy writing throughout the entire series. I do indeed find myself enjoying the episodes with other DC characters in it a lot more. Such as they are.

JeyNyce

The Black Canary episode is out online.  I saw it and it wasn't bad.  I like the way they did the effects for her sonics.  Overall good episode.
