Now I'm cranky-- a vent

This has been a tough week.  I work third shift, have trouble sleeping when the seasons change, and have been getting short changed on sleep as a result.

So this morning I go to bed 2 hours earlier, intending to catch up on sleep.  The weather was perfect for it, overcast and cool.  I had a UPS delivery coming so I put a "Do not disturb, 3rd shifter sleeping" sign on the apartment door.

Of course the idiot ignores the sign and wakes me up about 4 hours later anyway.  Now once I wake up, I can't go back to sleep until the next day, so I don't know how I'm going to get through work tonight, let alone drive a car safely back home for a 45 minute trip in the morning.  He acknowledged that he read the sign, but chose to ignore it anyway.

To make matters worse, the deliver was a graphics card that would save my system from becoming obsolete.  The card didn't work, is defective, and has to be sent back--at my expense of course, meaning I'm out $20 or so if they do replace it.  If it had worked, I at least would have something to feel good about.

It's days like this that make me want to scream.

Yeah, change of seasons is rough. I've been waking up sick a lot and my girl is coming to visit soon.

I know this sounds redundant but you should set yourself some time aside just for sleeping. If not I highly recomend 20 minute naps. I dont take them during the week but I have one on saturday and one on sunday (even if it's two hours since I woke up) and it really helps me catch up with the sleep I'm missing. Just dont let yourself sleep all day on a nap, set an alarm.

Hope the new card works fine for you...

Oh, and I already do set aside time to sleep.  8 hours a day, same time every day.  Usually, I sleep fine, but changes of seasons aren't much fun.  And once I wake up, I can't fall asleep again usually until the next day.

Believe me, after 2 years of third shift, I do know how to cope with it, but you can't ever get used to it.  It just isn't natural, and unfortunately, the rest of the world doesn't cooperate very well with us night people.

Hehehe, I meant the NEW new card. I went through the same thing, a DOA card.

As a devoted coffeeholic who relatively often has to work late in the night to meet deadlines, you might try – in extreme moderation – a ginseng-based energy drink (not coffee; caffeine keeps you from sleeping but doesn't keep you fully awake, in my experience at least). Not sure how it would affect your sleep afterward, though.

Hopefully the next days are going to be better and you biological clock catches up to the new season as soon as next morning.

Yeah, I have these weeks occassionally, but being woke up after posting a sign not to, combined with the bad card was just a bad blow.

And it usually takes a few weeks at least to get used to the new light patterns.  Yeah, not fun.

Of course, you *did* call the UPS office & make a complaint against the git, didn't you?  That sort of blatant idiocy doesn't need to be accepted with a shrug.....it needs to be expunged from the face of the planet!

Sent an email, got a response asking for my phone number saying that it will be passed along to the local office as soon as they get it.

On another note, I made another attempt to get some extra sleep, the weather was overcast for a second day, and this time I got over 9 hours of solid sleep, so I feel a whole lot better today.

I also took epi's recommendation, and it did seem to help.

The Phantom Eyebrow

I'm afraid I can't top Epi's advice but its good to hear things are getting better, Catwho.  I sometimes find some soothing musical strains can help lull me to sleep.  And if I'm just staring at the ceiling into the wee hours, I find trying to read a book knocks me right out then.
