Marvel is now offering a online subscription to back issues.

http://www.newsarama.com/marvelnew/Online/MarvelOnlinea.html

I'm going to look into this. Depending on the content available it could become a cheap way to read some comics. At about $10 a month (or $5/month with a year commitment) as long as you read about 4 recent issues you're making good on your investment. Still it all depends on how the browser works, I've found they're past online comics to be very awkward and hard to read or of poor quality.

I'm actually quite interested as well. The only fall back is that you don't get to actually own a hardcopy of the issue. But at a possible $5 a month, I can't really complain. I'm also wondering if Marvel is doing this to counter people pirating comics online.

Yeah a big part of it is countering piracy, they mention it in the article.

The hardcopy thing is disappointing, but depending on the content available it's a pretty decent price to get a chance to read some comics. 5 bucks is like less than two new comics!

In the article (haven't yet been to Marvel's site) they say they launched with 2500 issues available and will be adding 20 additional issues a week. Recent comics aren't added for 6 months to protect regular sales.

Interesting news.

Some quick thoughts:

- Chances are the image files will be around 72 DPI, sized to fit most standard screen resolutions... clear enough to read even if reasonably zoomed in, but not good enough to be printed.

- The official press release states that the comics will not be downloadable... unless Marvel's sitting on some new technology that restricts a user's real-time access to the contents of his/her computer's video memory cache while still making that data available to the browser, people will still find a way to get the images onto their hard drives (although doing so might be more trouble than it's worth).

- They haven't released an official list of what is going to be available, but I can't help but think that it's in their best interest to offer a sizable portion of the archive for free. Most people signing on and paying for the service will probably be on there to check out the more popular classic comics (Spider-Man, X-Men, Strange Tales, Avengers, etc.). If they have material on there that isn't popular and isn't in competition with any of their printed archival editions (the Marvel Essential TPBs and such) they might as well offer that material for free in the hopes of getting some sort of grass-roots advertising campaign for their less popular characters... who knows, maybe the next big hit character could come from enough people reading online back-issues of Millie the Model or Slapstick.

I like this. I have been working on a good model for digital comics distribution (as a fantasy, I'm not exactly sitting on a million in startup money) and this 'game tap' approach might be better than the 'steam' approach I was thinking of. I'll probably fork up the yearly suscription if the comics look good and if the 'back issues' start at a few months ago.

Silver Shocker

I think this is really neat.

I've been reading Marvel's digital comics for well over a year now, and they've even gone so far as factoring into my purchasing decisions. The format quality has gotten better over time, and most of my initial complaints about them are no longer valid. I will be interested in this new format to see if it's any good.

I'm very strongly anti-piracy, and though I'm sure this won't stop illagal comic downloading, it might be enough to convert a small number of readers to the honest side.

well at that rate i'll easily be able to read Astonishing X-Men, The Ultimates or Ultimate Wolver vs. Hulk
:P

I think that's a problem, though. None of the good stuff that they could hope to sell (Old issues featuring Deadpool, etc) will be put up. And since it's taking so long for a Deadpool Essential to come out (There's a freaking Werewolf By Night Essential TPB! Who the hell reads Werewolf By Night anymore?!) it'll be a long while before I can legally find them to read without having to go through the hassle of it being ordered from my local comic shop.

But the samples are a limited-time offer. I was thinking of something that's permanently free, sort of like the free sample songs offered for download on some musicians' websites.

I don't really see that as a problem. We all know that a Deadpool Essential will come out eventually. I think the main reason an Essential volume hasn't come out yet is because the TPBs that collect various Deadpool stories still sell well enough by themselves... the character is popular enough that the more expensive colour TPBs still sell, but not popular enough that those colour TPBs sales can be maintained while competing against a cheaper Essential volume.

But by offering the material that isn't popular enough to sell TPBs by themselves for free on-line, Marvel can hopefully create a market for some of those forgotten/obscure/less popular characters. People paying to read on-line editions of classic X-Men and Avengers stories will subsidize the cost of digitizing the less popular books so they won't stand to lose any money offering those books for free. If the internet has proven anything time and time again, people love free stuff, even if that free stuff isn't something they need or want or would like otherwise.

Thanks for the list lugaru. I'll be interested to read about your thoughts on the format and how readable it is.

I just noticed they've got 1953's Young Men magazine archived. I can imagine a lot of puzzled looks from the title alone .

Um...the list is easily accessible by going to thier website. You click on Digital Comics, then the list is right there. You can read their older archieved comics plus one or two new ones as free samples.
