kkhohoho

In case anyone thinks this is a hoax, it's not.

I sense a disturbance in the Force...

GrizzlyBearTalon

Wow... that looks sweet :gbthungry me want!!!

GhostMachine

Too bad they're not both in the same versions of the game.

Vader is apparently in the PS3 version, while the X-Box 360 version has Yoda.

I'm a little torn on this. I mean, it looks awesome, but Star Wars looks completely out of place in Soul Calibur. A light saber clanging up against a big sword just looks...inconsistent? I mean really, that saber should slice right through.  :P

I'd rather have a Star Wars fighting game using the SC engine. They made a crappy SW fighting game on PS1, so it's time to upgrade.

really though, how the hell did this crossover happen?

UnfluffyBunny

hey, i LOVED that sw fighting game on the ps1! lol
and yeah, if you go to the main star wars website, this has been up for about a month with a few screens :)

It probably happened to celebrate star wars 30th anniversary as a tribute of some sort. Same thing that happened with g4, family guy, robot chicken, and who knows what else. The only thing odd about it is the light sabers/futuristic gear, but if they could force in heihachi, link, and spawn...then crossovers with little green puppets, and evil shiny helmet men shouldn't bother you as much.

Reepicheep

I'm not too freaked out by this. Soul Calibur was never really about anything making sense, so long as you could kick each other's butts with the power of awesome. And we all know both Vader and Yoda are awesome.

I don't know how drunk or stoned they were when they came up with the idea, but I really don't think I mind.

That said, I'm stuck with Yoda on Xbox, it seems. I want Vader.

Also, I liked that old ps1 fighting game!  ^_^

TheMarvell

heihachi and link actually seemed to fit in fairly well to me, since both have obvious asian influences, just like the rest of the cast. Spawn, on the other hand, didn't fit in as well, but it wasn't too bad because there were a couple other new characters with the Tod Mcfarlane look.

but you're right. Soul Calibur was never about making sense, lol.

NomadX

Yeah it doesn't make sense but it's better than the "secret" characters they had in SC3. I'm hoping they increase the already cool character creation with more costumes and such. Oh, and they better keep the parts for Kos-mos >.>

BWPS

Wii doesn't even get this, does it?

God, now I can't play my second-favorite fighting game ever, what am I going to do?

lugaru

Yeah, I hate their one bonus per console approach... like Spawn on the X-Box with Link on the Game Cube. What if I want link to beat up spawn for some weird reason?

It's worse now... people are REALLY going to want to fight Darth Vader as Yoda... maybe as a micro transaction download?

The PS2 version of SC2 had the best bonus character (Heihachi, from the Tekken series), IMHO, at least in terms of it all "making sense" story-wise, since the Soul Calibur and Tekken games are set in the same universe. Never did try playing as Link on the Game Cube version (how do you pull of those moves using a Game Cube controller anyway? I've already got relatively tiny hands and I still think the Game Cube controller doesn't provide enough palming area to pull off simultaneous face button presses). I'm guessing his move-set was probably similar to Sophitia's or Lizard Man's (because of the sword/shield combo)

I'm pretty sure that's the plan all along. Either that or there'll be a "Gold version" of the game in a couple of years that will have all of the console-exclusive characters, so that people can pay twice for the same game .

A light saber ought to just pass through another light saber as well then.  But they don't seem to (as in seen many times throughout SW movies).

except that in the movies it shows lightsabers being able to burn through metal, which is what swords are made out of. Just an observation.

Aren't nearly all of the weapons being wielded in Soul Calibur magical? I know without a doubt that Soul Edge and its counterpart sword are incredibly powerful magical artifacts but aren't most of the fighters basic weapons also at least slightly mystical as well? I'd imagine their magical nature would nullify the lightsabers usual ease at slicing through metal.

Also, if you have played KOTOR which is canon the lightsabers can be countered by the metallic vibro blades without instantly destroying them. I know the Soul Calibur people aren't using vibro blades but still it makes a precedent for a metallic weapon able to handle exchanges with a lightsaber without being destroyed.

UnfluffyBunny

there are specific scenes in the movies where sabers bounce off surfaces, sabers are made of electromagnetic arcs, nothing more than light until something collides with the arc, in which case it becomes denser, giving the effect of mass, most lightsaber users wield double handed because there is still a force required to make the cut as with any weapon.
phrik and cortosis are also 2 metals which not only cant be cut by sabers, but can disrupt the arc and shut a saber off.

I totally want to do that.

Seriously though, this is pretty cool. I wouldn't buy the game just for this, but it is very cool nonetheless.

juancho

:( I was happier with other crappy rumour that Kratos from God of War being the PS3 exclusive character, he might have fitted wayy nicer than Vader :(

UnfluffyBunny

for the record, yoda = awesome
starkiller (the apprentice) = even more awesome
vader = (waiting for him to come onto downloadable content)

[edit]
ooh should mention, the story mode fits the characters in well, there's been a few disputes over the time period but after all, star wars was "a long time ago" :)

TheMarvell

heard Yoda is a really unbalanced character though. You can't hit him with high attacks nor can you grab him. Seems like a cheap, unbalanced, overpowered character that will be fun to play as, but offer little challenge and will be annoying as hell to fight against.

UnfluffyBunny

actually yoda isnt that easy to play as, his move set is lacking, not sure about being grabbed, but half his attacks require him to be in mid air so high attacks do indeed work against him, and his force abilities are... a block (which drains half the bar) and being able to turn in mid air (takes quarter of a bar)
compare that to the apprentice with force pull, force lightning and a force jump, also considering yoda's a pretty slow character, he's pretty balanced in my books, it's pure novelty to play as him

Figure Fan

I really like The Apprentice in this.

Yoda rocks too.

Voldo is still my fave <3

gengoro

I know fighters are about competition but is it me or is single player really lacking compared to the previous ones?  Same thing happened with VF5.  Focus on multiplayer but strip down single.

UnfluffyBunny

story mode is a lil empty in comparison to previous versions yeah, arcade mode... well thats just arcade mode....
tho gotto give credit on ascension and descension, even tho i feel they're used to break you into customising characters to compete in online play....
gotto say online.. i'm dissapointed with the usual "player style" 99% of players online use kilik or some ugly costumed custom character made only to have high stats and no visual appeal with kiliks move set, and just use long range pokes..... seriously a sad day...
i've found 2 ways around this, 1, keep playing and learn kiliks moveset, easy to counter after a little while, 2, use ivy in whip mode, she has a longer reach ;)

gengoro

Yeah, online is pretty much a spam fest.  Ive had to resort to doing it to sometimes.  I know this game takes skill and all but buttom mashing can go a long way in it sometimes.
