This should be stickied, but with a name like "Recommended Freeware Games"
Or simply put it on the Freeware Sharing thread.

thank you gremlin.  personally, i was hoping for my friends confirmation of good games.  which of those do you recommend from that list?

Ok, Looks like I finally have a spare moment to share my favorite freeware games...

COTTAGE OF DOOM
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=197730

It's probably one of the best stragedy zombie survival games out there and it's designed like an old 8-Bit arcade game or something made for the Amiga system. You are trapped in a lone cabin in the woods and armed with a shotgun and 4 rooms full of furniture you need to survive for as long as possible. Break apart the furniture to find ammo and use the wood to board up the windows and doors before the undead break thru. A great game for killing time and getting rid of that need to be in a zombie movie.

and

DEATH WORM
http://gmarcade.com/showgame.php?id=10

Have you ever watched the Tremors movies or the short lived TV show and wondered what those arcade games in the background would have had playing on them. This is your chance to play them. You play as a monster worm who is living under the desert and your job is to survive as long as possible while eating your prey that is walking above you. Be warned however that once the military shows up they start fighting back and if you last long enough then more extraterrestrial help arrives. Eat and Leave No Survivors!

Hope you enjoy!

Speaking of MUGEN and freeware fighting games in general..

D Fighter - A fighting game with DC characters, though not made with MUGEN.
http://maximoff.alreadyread.net/DFighter/index.htm

Marvel vs CAPCOM: Eternity of Heroes - A MUGEN fullgame based of the MvC series.  You might have to configure the cfg to get it working on your computer though.
http://www.infinitymugenteam.com/Forum_345/index.php?topic=9980.0

King of Fighters Zillion - A King of Fighters fangame made with MUGEN that's actually pretty darn good, though if you want music, you'll have to add in your own. Keep in mind that some of the characters have an alternate version you can get by pressing start while selecting a char.

I third Wesnoth.

EDIT: One more thing, which is one of the best freeware games to date.  It's called Cavestory, and is a Action/Platformer/Shooter/RPG.  That basically sums up the game, and it's GOOD.  Alongside the great gameplay, you have a pretty good story too.

I haven't had the change to go through it yet, just something I found online.

Monkkonen Games is worth a look.

Notrium is the best of the lot.  I never do too well, but it's a survivor sci fi game, where you survive the element, pick up equipment, and learn more about the mysterious planet you find yourself on.

Wazzal is okay too.  You explore in your space ship, earn money and get better ships.  It's pretty simple, you you can complete the entire game in one sitting.

NCSoft has Dungeon Runners and Exteel for download, dungeon runners is a little like a scaled back version of Guild Wars graphics wise, with the whole concept of public town areas and private dungeon instances. the game has an extreme comedy twist, many of the NPCs have really oddball sayings and the items names are really crazy (cardboard giant sword of the nocturnal rabid wombat)

you have a choice between 3 classes, warrior, wizard, and ranger, but you can mix and match skills at the skill trainers, or by finding and reading skill books. warriors are better with hand to hand combat and have bonuses to strenth and health, wizards are better with spells and get intelligence bonuses, and rangers are better with ranged weapons, and have a bit of a bonus to agility.

there's also an option to upgrade to a premium member status for five dollars a month, and mainly what that does is to give you unresticted access to the best weapons and items in the game. normal members can only use a certain percentage of the really high end items that drop in the dungeons.
http://www.dungeonrunners.com/

Exteel is an sci-fi shoot-em-up type of game featureing combat between japanese mecha style giant robots. the game is played must like a first person shooter, and you start out in a central lobby where you can chat with other players and watch for rooms with the different game types. to actually play, you either join or create a room with your desired game type (deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, territory control {king of the hill}, and last stand {base defence}) and once enough players have joined in, the action starts.

the graphics are really top notch, and the action is fast paced and intence. as you fight, you gain ranks and skill points that allow you to upgrade your abilities, credits to buy new equipment, and other perks. there's a tracking system that follows how much you use certain weapon types, and as your percentage of use goes up with a particular weapon, certain extra bonues unlock for that weapon type.

your mecha itself is composed of five basic components, the head, that determines scan range (the maximum range you can target certain weapons, i think) and skill points (used for activateing special attacks that you can buy), the core (torso) that determines your maximum energy level (for boosting) and accounts for the bulk of your hitpoints. your arms determine marksmanship (a bonus to your targeting rate) and heat disipation (useing weapons creates heat, if they over heat, you can't use them till they cool down) and your legs determine your running speed and braking power when boosting, modified by the overall weight of your mecha and the carrying capacity of the legs. your final component is your booster, a backpack like item that you can use for rocket powered dashes and jumps. different boosters use energy at different rates and provide different levels of thrust power. some boosters also have built in weapons systems or generators that provide a bonus to your max energy rateing.

there are several "sets" of mecha components that represent certain specific mecha models, but you can freely mix and match these sets to create an ideal conbination of the different traits. there are three classes of mecha component, heavy, standard, and light. light mecha components reduce weight, but have lower hit points, heavy mecha parts do the reverse, and standard mecha parts are inbetween. you can also buy paints to customize the color of your mecha, and each component can be painted a seperate color if desired.

your mecha can also be equiped with one or two weapons, and you can have 2 seperate weapon configurations on your mecha, allowing you to switch between them during battle (good for switching out overheating weapons for fresh ones, or to go from close range to long range combat). the weapon types include the heavy siege weapons, two handed rocket launchers and cannons, that deal lots of damage at very long range, but have very slow fire rates and are difficult to target. the rest of the weapons are one handed weapons, and can be carried in pairs, or mixed and matched for different purposes.

rifles and shotguns are easier to target and have a better fire rate, but the range is shorter and they do less damage than the siege weapons. SMGs are the easiest to target and can fire continues sprays of shots, but they have very short range and deal the least amount of damage of the ranged weapons. melee weapons include swords, spears, and an odd looking knife like weapon, and don't need to be targeted, but they do require you to be right next to the mecha your attacking. they do decent damge, and some of them have extra effects, like a stun, or can hit multiple enemies at once.

there's also a pair of special items that are wielded like weapons, but don't deal damage, the shields and rectifiers. shields block damage, but must by in line with the attack to be effective, and certain shields are better against certain weapon types, and rectifiers are ranged items that heal damage on other mechas instead of causing damage. ((healing only works on teammates in the team style game types. i'm not sure about pure deathmatch games.))

certain high end mecha sets and weapons are only available if you purchase NCcoins, a one shot at a time cash purchase that acts as a special type of credits in the game.

www.gamehippo.com has a buttload of freeware games. They also review them, too. It's a pretty good site for Freeware games.

EDIT: Also, some of my favorite games are located here, especially the Ragdoll Masters game. N-Ball is pretty addicting. Super Stealball looks cool, but I never got into it. These games are free, but for the full version their only $10 each. Cheaper then some XBLA games though... *coughPennyArcadecough*

I just started playing FreeCol, which is a freeware remake of Colonization.  Most of the actually gameplay features are done. Most of the remaining work is with graphics and music.  I fired it up, intending to just try it out for a minute and immediately got sucked in.  Loads of fun.

I only have one Recommend if you guys are in for Shoot-em-up, with only bosses.

Fraxy
A shoot em up freeware where you destroy bosses, they have Free where you can duke it out on any bosses without any restrictions. Not only you fight bosses, you can make bosses with a Fraxy Editor program. There's also an option where you change ranks to modify the difficulty against the bosses. I set the rank less than 25 to make it easy, or above 50 if you are good at dodging bullets. Plus watch out for Homing lasers if they have those.

I found a site that has some games by independent developers. Mainly very small manned teams, that run from just one person, to maybe half a dozen guys working on their own projects. It's called Experimental Gameplay, and there are some really cool games on there. One of my favorites is The Amazing Flying Brothers. Timewasting, but yet addicting.
