so is this based off the movies? the cartoons? the comics? all of the above?

only reason I ask is because the Lego Star Wars and Indiana Jones games are drawing inspiration from their obvious movie counterparts, but Batman has had a lot of different versions in several different mediums. Just wondering.

It's based off everything. The Lego Batman Team chose what they thought were the best versions of each character.  A prime example was a screenshot showing TAS Scarecrow standing next to Returns Catwoman.

I've never regretted that more than I do right now.

I pledge my first-born to Lego Batman.

Scratch that... Gday's first-born.

Talavar

This looks awesome!  Lego Star Wars was a lot of fun, & I'm looking forward to Lego Indiana Jones, but not as much as this.

I don't think that's the Returns version of Catwoman. Looks like the version that was running around in the DCU for years.

I would kill and stuff Spud for that game.

Did anyone see if this is a single or player game or 2 persons.  Star wars was a 2 player game but I thought I saw that this was a single..

This is also co-op.

I see a flaw in it:

The announcer's voice says "This game has not yet been rated" but clearly, its rating is "FA" for Freakin Awesome.

I will sell one half of Cardmaster's soul for this game.

Cardy sold the other half for a pack of Pokemon cards.

Meej sold his for a pony ride and a meatball sub.

I think I'd take that deal, too.

BentonGrey

Woo-hoo!  Man, this looks freakin' awesome......it looks like TAS goodness, for the most part, and it has all the earmarks of being the first GOOD Batman game!  Well...other than that TAS game that came out for SuperNES.

Gremlin follows a very rare sect of Christianity, which believes that if Punxsutawney Pete doesn't see his shadow on Easter morning, Jesus doesn't resurrect for another six months.

Jesus loved that rodent.

This looks like the best game ever. I KNOW I JUST SAID IT IN ANOTHER TOPIC BUT IT WARRANTS THE DOUBLE POST!

the_ultimate_evil

it'll be interesting to see how much the elements of lego SW carry over. eg the multiple characters you can play as, the humour and the custom abilitys

Glitch Girl

If this lives up to the level of the Star Wars lego games, I am SO there.

Wish it came out sooner though - I would love to take it to DragonCon to share with my out of town friends post convention.

JeyNyce

This is on my must get list along with Lego Indiana Jones

Glitch Girl

Well, I got it and me and my friend played it last night.

First impressions at roughly the 9% mark.  (some spoilers to follow)
Initially you start as Batman and Robin hunting down Riddler and the villians he's teamed with.  As you progress through a level, you find/build stations that have special "suits" that give specific characters new powers.  For example: the first suit you encounter is the Bat Demolitions suit, which means you can now place and detonate bombs.  Unlike the grenades in Indy, you use a button to set the bomb then HOLD the button to set it off.  This means you end up blowing yourself or your partner up a lot less.  You can also pick up undetonated charges in case you placed it in the wrong place.   Later on Robin gets a "Magentic" suit, which allows him to walk up certain special walls and clank around the screen with an amusing sound effect.  By then end of chapter 1, you have all of Batman's suits (heat resistant, bombs, sonic which breaks glass, and glide) and all but one of Robin's (magenetic, tech which allows you to remotely control certain devices, and collector suit which is basically a vacuum for special objects that can be turned in for ingame objects).  Not sure if we missed his or if he gets his chapter 2.  Suits are also upgradable by finding hidden red bricks around the place.

The batarang is a nice feature for the duo.  You hold down the attack button and move a floating marker around the screen.  If something's targetable, it'll get a little target on it.  When you release the button, the batarang flies out and hits the targets in the order you hilighted them.  While you're holding the button, you defelct some bullets with the batarang, so you can take a little time while aiming.

Sidenote: For freeplay you can play as Batgirl or Nightwing, who play very similiarly to Batman and Robin respecitvely INCLUDING use of the suits.  Every suit your counterpart has, you have, so Batgirl would have access to the Glide suit and Nightwing would have access to the tech suit and so on.

Gameplay feels a lot more solid than Indy so far.  The puzzles are a little trickier, but not too tough.  Fighting is still pretty basic, but has the added bonus of grappling (grabbing the enemy and then doing a move on them) and the fact that your uppercut can knock thugs up and offscreen with appropriate yelps.  Much more co-op puzzle solving in this one too, and the teamwork does pretty well.  We never got REALLY stuck, which is good.  Any time we were wondering what to do, usually observation of whichever suit they REALLY wanted us to have and the scene was enough to figure it out.

The vehicle missions are back, and so far we've only done one.  You drive the Batmobile and Robin's cycle through the city taking out Two-Face's and the Riddler's vehicles and break a buncha stuff.  No rails, just limited area, but you get machine guns, grapple, and turbo boost.  Reminde me a lot of the Hoth mission in Lego SW:TOT.  One quibble: In two player mode, Robin is TINY and somtimes hard to spot so that can be tricky.  I was lucky enough to get the Batmobile on our pass through it, so it wasn't as bad.

Initially the game seemed to be 3 chapters of 5 parts, plus freeplay.  This doubled the moment we finished Chapter 1 and unlocked access to Arkham.  When you switch to Arkham, you now control villians (initially the Riddler and Clayface), and now have access to a new chapter from the villians side.  Only played through the first part of CH1 here, but it had only one area where the original map overlapped this one, the rest was all new stuff.  This is also how you unlock playable villians that you'll need for all the free play modes.  Some powers I've encoutered so far: Riddler has a mind control ability that stuns enemies and  can be used to take over special civilians to operate out of reach levers and stuff (sorta like the tech suit only instead of controling a device, you're controlling a little lurching lego person), and Clayface is a mish-mosh of specials.  He has super strength (for lifting and dragging certain objects), high jump (for out of reach places) and a projectile attack where he throws a blob of lego clay at an enemy.  I know Mr Freeze can freeze people (even though I haven't unlocked him yet) and Poision Ivy has a toxic resistance which is needed to get into certain areas and Joker has a joybuzzer for dispatching enemies and powering mechanisms.  I'm sure there are more, but haven't seen 'em yet.

Oh yeah, and Killer Moth is in the roster. Killer Moth??? Oh man....

And Hush.  What a collection.  :)

Sidenote: custom character creation is in Arkham and is a bit macabre.  You have to see what I mean.
Quite liking it so far, if feels very much a stepup from Indy (which feels much more rushed in comparison now).  There are still a few problems, such as occasional moments where you fall off something and materialize in the worst spot possible and KEEP dying or occasional stupidity on your partner's AI in single player mode (which is why I recommend 2 live players)

The cut scenes are once again in mime, and are goofy as ever.  This is not a serious game, nor should it be and the cut scenes work well with it. Robin is portrayed as a goofball as are some of the villians (Clayface notably), but Batman is always stoic which is as it should be.

As I said, I'm only about 9-10% in so I'll try to report more when we get further in.  Overall, we're liking it a lot so far.  No "I HATE this level" part yet which is always good (like that @#$%&* podrace level in SWL) but still lots to do.

JeyNyce

I'm also 9-10% into the game as well and this game is up there with lego star wars.  It's a little too dark (meaning that it's hard to see some areas) but it the game is fun to play.  Does anybody like the fact that they used the soundtrack from the first Batman movie (elfman) for the game?  I like it at first, but after a while it was getting on my nerves.  I hope they change it when you get in the second act.

cripp12

thanks for the post Glitch.  Can't wait to play.

:( This came out too close to Christmas, so I'm not allowed to buy it NOW!

Tisk,tisk,tisk... Now a holographic Mew... I'd sell 3/4's of your soul for that!

I'm 33.1% into the game and I just finish the hero side.  Now I'm about to the the villains.  This game is great!  The music was getting on my nerves a bit but after the disco part of the game, it doesn't bother me any more, in fact I want more of it, crazy? I know.  Robin is a funny sidekick to have around when you play and you will use him just as much as you use batman, so he does have a purpose.  IMO if you like lego Star Wars, you will love Lego Batman.

the_ultimate_evil

i want it but it's not out until the 10th in the uk :(
