As I haven't bought regular issues in years now, what little I pick up anymore is more of the graphic novel types of stuff, and even then, it's very irregular.

This title caught my eye the other day at Borders, and was wondering if it was a stand-alone story (not in the regular issues), and if there's a continuing story after it (more to buy).  I'm prefering one-shots, so I don't have to worry about picking up #2 & 3 & etc if I can't find them immediately with the first one.  Anybody know much about this, and can recommend it (or warn me away)?

Well, it's the first storyline (I think) of the current incarnation of the Justice League.  It's not too shabby, though sometimes it's a little too talky/contemplative - particularly while Superman, Batman & Wonder Woman are making choices for the League (choices that end up not mattering, for an extra good use of time).

'Tornado's Path' is the first story arc, 'Lightning Saga' is the second one, I think it crosses over with the JSA, and features the LSH, not as they appear in their own comic, but much closer to their old 70's-80's incarnation. Needless to say, I liked it quite a lot. It is a self contained story, albeit one that sets up some other story arcs, and references other DCU events. If, like me, you are a big LSH fan, its pretty much 'must-read' material. Otherwise you might not think as much of it.

Oops, my mistake!  Got my weather-related titles mixed up I guess.

The Hitman

Yep yep, crosses with JSA. Issues #8- 12 JLA, #5- 6 JSA. Great stuff!

It was ok. The fill-in art hurt it a bit and I didn't follow it too well near the end (then again, I only bought the JLA issues). But the most important thing about that story is that it was there that Wally West made his long-overdebut return since Infinite Crisis.
