Mass Effect is Metal!

I just finished the game after a rental period. What a rush.

The beginning(on Eden Prime) is an awesome way to start a story, and certainly one I'm going ape for future tabletop campaigns.

I loved the aliens. The Hanar and Elcor are my favorites. I really wanted an Elcor in my party, weird though that may seem.

The game provides complex moral dilemmas on a backdrop of space exploration, robot smashing and ancient secrets. This was so fantastically done that I hope they make a Mass Effect 2.

And the characters were topnotch. Am I wrong for liking Joker more than the entire Enterprise crew from Star Trek:TNG?

glad to see another Mass Effect fan here :) I tried making a topic about this game back when it came out but nobody seemed to care about the game. Anyways, BioWare is planning on making this a trilogy, so it should be pretty cool. I don't know if they'll all be 360/PC exclusive since EA acquired BioWare, but we'll see. In the mean time though, you can download some new missions for 5 bucks (400 MS points).

The only complaint I have about the game is pretty much everyone's gripe: the barren, boring, lifeless side quest planets. Most of the side quests consist of the same boring crap: go to barren, different colored planet, find warehouse like building structure, and navigate through a bunch of stored crates inside and kill the bad guys. It was an idea that wasn't fully realized and there were also some things Bioware promised to make it into the game that never did (something the game Fable is notorious for), but besides that it's a fantastic game. I still have several achievements to get on it but I probably won't get to that for a while.

If you're interested further in the story, there's also a novel that takes place before the game about Anderson and Saren, called Mass Effect Revelations or something. Heard it was a good read.

I greatly enjoyed Mass Effect as well.  I would have liked to see a playable Elcor or Volus as well.

I very much liked the new "alignment" system (if it can be called that) as you could earn Renegade and Paragon at the same time and it was more than just the Bad/Good dichotomy that KotOR and Jade Empire used (though the side conversations and romance subplots were not as good as JE IMO).  Having trouble with the "Use character X for the majority of the game" achievements.  I used Ashley almost exclusively from the get go and didn't get the achievement for her.

A recent interview with the designers of the game on Game Informer stated that the game is planned as a trilogy.

This question pertains to the "Father Kyle" mission. Is there any way at all to make him surrender peacefully? Like maybe having Alenko in the party?

Dweomer Knight

In my two playthroughs I never really used Alenko; I don't believe that mission requires anyone specific (few of them do; even the mishes with the characters name in it can be done without them, it just pisses them off when you do).  One thing I did both times was always to max out Charm/Intimidate as soon as possible.  If those skills aren't high enough, certain dialogue options won't even appear.  In both games I did the mission fairly late so my skill in that area was maxed.  In both cases I had no difficulty getting him to surrender peacefully.  Even as the "Renegade", he offered to submit peacefully.  I don't know what the cutoff point is for your social skill to be high enough to affect him.  If your character is Paragon orientated and being calm and reasonable doesn't yield a peaceful solution, I would guess that your Charm or Paragon level isn't high enough.

Oh my gosh, this game is amazing. I need to play it again sometime. Maybe as a soldier type person next time... I think I was an engineer last time.

Great game.  I had the same gripes as TheMarvell, in addition to textures loading and disappearing during cut scenes.  These stick out because the rest of the game was excellent.  I did see an interview with Bioware recently that said they were looking to fix the bland side quest on the sequel.  That was on Gamespot...I think.

Tortuga

I rented it for two weeks for my 360, then I decided that someday I'll buy it, when it's cheaper.  I enjoyed it, but found it difficult to manage all those quests.  Also, due to either my diminished intelligence or smallish CRT television, some buildings/port maps were annoyingly confusing.

Multiplayer (or co-op!) would definitely make this game more desirable for me.  After years of playing games online, doing the single-player-in-a-massive-world thing gets a little lonely.

Dweomer Knight

The game is in fact largely sidequests.  There's only about 5 or 6 planets/systems (plus the Citadel) that you need to go to.  And since just about everything scales to your level it doesn't really matter what order you do things in (mostly).

Being able to play with friends is fun but I doubt we'll see it for this game.  Since the game is an action RPG (as opposed to an FPS) there are too many times where Player 2 wouldn't have anything to do (e.g. dialogue sequences, anytime aboard the Normandy etc.).  It would be neat to add a feature where player 2 could control a secondary weapon on the Mako similar to some of the vehicles in the Halo series.

forgot about one more complaint I had about the game, and that's the Mako. It controls a little weird to me, and they really messed up the turret on it. I mean, so much so that it's only useful against those big worm like things. You can't aim it up or down. That's a pretty big screw up that I'm surprised got past the alpha phase...

Really though, this was the game that sold the 360 for me. Even though the 360 has been a much bigger hassle than I ever thought it would be, and if I had known the game was coming out for PC, I probably wouldn't have bought one. I got it in September last year and I'm already on my FOURTH one. Bad luck or a piece of utter crap console? All I know is this is the last Microsoft console I buy, and that kills me to say since it obviously has fantastic games like Mass Effect! :(

I heard the game got great reviews, but I'm waiting for the PC version, later this year, which is suppose to be slightly better.

That's the final transmission you get when you kill the VI on the Moon that has gone rogue. :D

I want this, but since they won't sell it to me for PC, and I don't want to pay $50 for a license. Stupid.
