Lightning Bug

In preparation for the upcoming Champions Online MMO, I thought it might be fun for anyone who has played the Champions tabletop RPG to share their characters with everone.  At Valandar's suggestion, I tried to come up with a format that others can copy and paste so we have a little bit of consistency with how the stats are displayed.

I thought it might also be cool to use this thread after the release of Champions Online to discuss converting these pen-and-paper characters to their online counterparts.

To kick things off, here's Lightning Bug.  She's built with 5th Edition rules, with 200 base points and 150 points of Disadvantages:

Background/History:
Lightning Bug's first memory is stumbling out of an alleyway naked, tired and in pain.  The year was 1962.  Not knowing where she came from or where she was, she crept out into the night, confused and miserable.  Compounding the physical and mental shock of her situation was an overwhelming sense of urgency and purpose; A sense that she was here for a reason, and the reason was important.

Stealing enough clothes and coats to mask her startling appearance, Lightning Bug moved through the city, hoping to discover some clue that would help uncover what was apparently her mission here.  She rested where she could, stealing food to stay alive, and remained ever alert for anything that might shed light on what that mission was.  Some tattered shred of memory, or perhaps pure instinct, left her with knowledge of her powers, which she used to help herself get by.  It wasn't long until some innate sense of justice drove her to defend the other homeless people she crossed paths with during her travels, and soon legends and rumors began springing up of a silver angel who would help those in peril or in need.

It was during this time that the super-team known as Guardian Force was beginning to form.  One of its founding members, the Omni-Man Athrid G'aladon, caught wind of the rumors.  It was made known to him through the Omni-Force that following these urban legends to their source would lead him to a being who's existence was important to the fate of the world.  He set about finding this silver angel, and in the end succeeded.  Convinced that she belonged with Guardian Force, he talked the frightened and exhausted Lightning Bug into returning to the team's temporary headquarters.

After discussing her situation, it was unanimously agreed upon that she belonged with them, and Lightning Bug was made a full member of Guardian Force.  She would go on to battle many foes and save countless lives, but never loose the nagging sense that she had something of vast importance yet to accomplish.  In response to her disturbing lack of memory, and the constant stress of wondering what it was she was supposed to do, she developed a quick witted, sharply humerous personallity.  But behind the wise-cracking facade lay a shattered soul, deathly afraid that if she let herself start to cry, she might never stop.  This made personal relationships impossible, but the laugh-a-minute nature of her defense mechanisms kept anyone from seeing the tragic and lonely nature of her life.

For nearly two decades she fought alongside her teammates in Guardian Force, until the disastrous battle against the metahuman known as Kronos.  Though the villain was defeated, hundreds lost their lives during his rampage.  Among the dead were three of her friends and teammates.  Wracked with crushing guilt and sorrow, she vanished once more into the shadows of the city's underbelly.

Guardian Force disbanded during the public relations nightmare that followed these devastating events, it's remaining members scattered to the four corners of the Earth.  In the years that followed Lightning Bug would continue her search for answers, striking out at evil from the rooftops, sewers and alleyways.  Twenty years would pass without revelation or the loss of urgency that haunted her.

It is now a new millenium, and under the guidance of former-member Bedrock (now called Tektonic), Guardian Force is beginning to reform, and Lightning Bug has emerged from the shadows once again to fight alongside its members, both new and old.

Personallity/Motivations:
On the outside, Lightning Bug is smart, quick-witted, and funny.  Though it comes naturally to her, she exaggerates these traits to mask an underlying sorrow.  She has had to deal with the stress and worry of failing to do the important task she knows she was sent here to do for decades now.  She constantly worries if it isn't already too late.  She also feels lost and out of touch, having no memories or knowledge of where she comes from.

She is very hard to get close to.  Her physical appearance, while striking and beautiful, is still inhuman.  Even if someone could come to grips with touching skin made of a metal that is constantly reforming itself in an effort to imitate actual flesh, it gives off a low-yield electrical charge which is uncomfortable and sometimes painful for normal humans.  This coupled with the fact that it's nearly impossible to get her to be serious about anything makes her distant to all but her closest friends.  On the upside, however, she has managed to parlay her stunning appearance and charmingly abrasive wit into a successful modeling career.

Recently she has begun to wonder if she might not be ageless.  Her physical health and appearance have not changed at all since she stumbled from that alleyway more than forty years ago.  She has frequent therapuetic discussions with Tektonic on the subject of immortality, seeking help with coming to grips with endless years of no knowledge of her origins or her ultimate purpose.

Powers/Tactics:
Lightning Bug has insect-like wings, which she can use for agile and speedy flight.  She also has antennae sprouting from her forehead, which may be responsible for her enhanced agility, dexterity, and balance.

Lightning Bug is convinced that the chrome-like appearance of her skin is not natural.  She describes the use of her wings as being something akin to flexing a muscle, while the presence of her metal skin feels more detached; a part of her, but a more distant part than her wings or limbs.  Her friend and teammate Tektonic has theorized that its a synthetic, psycho-reactive metal grafted to Lightning Bug's skin.  Whatever the case, it provides excellent resistance to all forms of physical damage, as well as protecting her from extremes in temperature.  Also, while the claws she can extend and retract from the back of either hand appear to consist of this same material, it is unknown if they originate from the metal itself or are a part of Lightning Bug's mutation the metal has adapted to and enhanced.

It appears to have added no appreciable weight to her body, as she can fly without impedement.

Her abillity to generate and control electricity allows her to project lightning bolts, generate powerful and damaging electric fields around herself and generate blinding flashes to stun her foes.  Currently she lacks the ability to control electrical current to a fine degree, such as would be required to turn a TV on or off, or kill a person by shutting down their nervous system.  It remains to be seen if she will ever achieve this sort of control over her powers.

Appearance:
Even without her unique features Lightning Bug would be a striking woman; tall and powerfully built, with long flowing hair and delicately beautiful face.  It is her metahuman features, however, that make her truly remarkable.  Ornate wings, membranous and segmented very much like an insects jut from the middle of her back, and equally insect-like antennae curl above her head from just above the hair line.  Her eyes are solid blue, and when her electical abilliies are engaged crackle with irradescent lightning.  Her hair is long and lush, and possesses a slight metallic quality, almost like blue copper.  But her most spectacular attribute of all is her silver skin.  Though it appears to be something akin to polished chrome, the mirror-like metal is constantly remolding itself in an effort to emulate actual flesh.  The effect almost makes Lightning Bug appear to be a being composed of liquid silver.

Good question, and in 1988 when I originally wrote her up I'm sure I would have had a dandy answer.  As it stands now, the Multipower point totals are screwed up from the 5th edition conversion.  Apparently running a 4th edition character through 5th edition Hero Designer and not checking your work is a bad idea.

Thanks for pointing that out.  I don't have my books with me, but I'll get her fixed up tonight and re-posted tomorrow.

Lightning Bug

Okay, did a little work on her from memory and what little info is contained in Hero Designer.

Just came across this.  It's been many years since I've played Champions...but this seems to be a very low powered Supes.  For example, only a 60 STR and a 5 speed???   Oh and I think I probably would have added a killing attack to express the intensity of his heat vision.  I do like the general way that you've stat'ed him out though.  Right on with all the life supports and the variable effects energy blast was a nice touch.

Champions was always a hard game in that you had to have a pretty clear idea about what you wanted in a hero.  But of course, the strength is that you can pretty build anything you want.

Well, any how very interesting!  Back in the day, I would loved to have used these stats to throw Supes for a short time into my campaign and see how my players would have reacted.

Lightning Bug

Thanks, Dr. Volt. :)

Actually, his heat vision did start off an RKA, but it quickly became cost-prohibitive (I was trying to keep him at 350 of under).  Ditto for 60 strength.  While trying to squeeze everything in to 350 points, I realized that this write-up was definately going to be for the DCAU Supes, and being able to lift 100 tons seems about right for that incarnation.  However, I had to remove his super-speed completely.  The DCAU Superman raced Flash around the world, at times running on water they were moving so fast...hmmmm...now that I think about it, maybe I should nuke Tunneling from his Flight multipower and add a megascale, must remain in contact with a surface-type of flight to represent that.  What do you think?

If you are concerned about keeping Supes to 350 pts or under I would seriously restrict him to only the most classic powers you can.  Iow, I'm thinking his super speed (i.e. being on flash's level) is not as important.  And from a story telling perspective it's easily explained.  I would think that he has gotten very used to being overconfident (when you're that powerful who wouldn't?).  Iow, he probably doesn't use that kind of speed that often.  I would kick his STR up to atleast 70 though.  Another justification type thought I had is that there is tons of variations of Supes that has been done....not just with Elseworlds...but in live action movies and in animation.  And just the few that I'm familiar with interpret his power levels dramatically different....and often differently from episode to episode.  So, there's room to scale him down and still be true to canon as it were.   :)

Lightning Bug

Okay, I re-did him a little...which is to say I totally abused the power framework mechanic to get everything to fit.  Just pretend the GM is either really lenient or using him as an NPC.

APPEARANCE

Hair Color:   Black
Eye Color:   Blue
Height:       1.89 m (6'4")
Weight:      100.00 kg (230 lbs.)

Description:
Superman is a good looking man standing 6'2'' and weighing 230 lbs. He has blue eyes and slicked back dark hair. He wears a blue suit with red trunks, boots and cape.

BACKGROUND

Kal-El is the last son of the doomed planet Krypton. Sent as a baby to Earth in a rocket built by his parents, he landed near a small Kansas farm where he was found by the Kents. Since the Kents were unable to have children, they kept the baby and raised him as their own, calling him Clark. As Clark grew up he was instilled with the Kent's sense of responsibility and justice. He also developed amazing powers and strength, which he kept a secret to all but his adopted parents. When he grew up he moved to the city of Metropolis and became a reporter for the Daily Planet newspaper. There he met fellow reporter Lois Lane and young photographer Jimmy Olsen. The three became a loosely knit team for the Planet and were often sent after stories together. With Clark's coming to the big city there also came his heroic alter identity of Superman, saving the people of Metropolis from a variety of wrong doers and becoming an icon of truth, justice and the American way.

PERSONALITY

Not only was Clark raised "right" by the Kents, he also has come to learn much about his homeworld of Krypton and seeks to prevent similar catastrophes from happening to his adopted home. Perhaps it is because no one on Earth can truly claim to be more powerful than he, that Clark feels disdain for the bullies and tyrants of the world. He realizes if he'd been that petty he'd never have the friends, family, and love that he does now. He cherishes his "humanity" and is very protective of those who look to him for aid.

Superman is tremendously strong when he puts his mind to it, is able to fly, and is nearly impervious to harm from conventional means, although he can be shaken up by massive attacks. He can see through most substances (except lead) and project powerful heat rays from his eyes. He can hear ultrasonic sounds and has telescopic vision. He can survive in almost any environment, but requires an air supply. Superman is vulnerable to the strange space substance called Kryptonite.

CAMPAIGN USE

The big gun. The Example. He can also be used as a mentor or a sage on Kryptonian lore and history. He's seen much in his relatively short life and has lot's of advice.

P.S. I made the write-up above all formatted and pretty in case anyone but me is going to post characters and wants to use it as a template.
