Dr Pepper issues challenge to Guns N' Roses http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080327/music_nm/pepper_dc

Considering this album has been "in production" since 1994, I seriously doubt that Dr. Pepper will have to pay up.

Still, I find this highly amusing and wanted to share.

Anybody who cared about G&R is grown up and has kids, or has died off in some crack den. If he released it, it would be laughed into bargain bins across the country.

Chinese Democracy: the Daikatana of Rock.

Not quite Daikatana yet. More like the "Duke Nukem Forever" of Rock.

GogglesPizanno

I heard some of the bootlegged tracks from a year or so ago... Daikatana IS more apt.
Though after a year and his mentality, who knows what it sounds like now.

I'm pullin for him though, I would really like a free Dr. Pepper.

Wow. Bitter much?

To put it mildly you are wrong. I've heard kids talk about the new GnR album. Kids around the age of 15.

And I suppose every 15-year-old who wears a Che Guevara t-shirt is deeply interested in socialist politics, right?

Kids latch onto "old people stuff" to make themselves feel more mature than their contemporaries. Simple as that.

Guitar Hero and Rock Band are why. Some people knock the games, but they're doing a fantastic job of bringing old rock music to the ears of kids. Met a 13 year old the other day buying a Deep Purple album because he liked the song on Rock Band. Blew my mind. Hell, Emmy walks around the house singing Blitzkrieg Bop after hearing it so often in Rock Band. There's something insanely awesome about a 2 year old singing a Ramones song.

But seriously, Axl is so full of himself it's hard too see the new GnR album as anything but a waste. When both Slash and Buckethead are sick of you it's a good sign your future album is going to horribly suck.

Go check out a poster sale at a college or university. It's packed with Floyd, Stones, and Beatles posters. The people buying them listen to the same crap as everybody else, but they externalize their "uniqueness" by pretending to be connaisseurs.

Also it's like Duke Nukem Forever (as previously mentioned) in that unless this is the most amazing rock album ever made, it's going to get SAVAGED by critics after taking so long to come out.  It's reached novelty album status.

Never was that into Guns n' Roses. I liked Appetite For Destruction and G n' R Lies as a kid, but I always thought the Use Your Illusion double-album was a practice in excess (I mean, more excessive than usual for an LA glam-metal act)... it was one of those records where they could have jettisoned half of the songs and reduced the running time of about a third of the other tracks and come out with a tighter and more compelling release. Still had some good songs on it, though, in spite of all the bloat.

Still, a much-delayed and much-hyped (to the point of becoming an urban myth) record like Chinese Democracy with a very dubious production history (seriously, how could Axl burn through $13 million for this thing? Even with all the cocaine, hair extensions, and botox injections, it boggles the mind that an album can cost that much) is the type of thing that just doesn't fly with consumers anymore. They should just do a Radiohead and try to come up with some new marketing/distribution scheme. I just can't see how any album could live up to 14 years of anticipation by their fans and the music press.

Meh. I like Velvet Revolver now , anyway.

Then can I have yours?
I'll trade you a new GnR CD for it!

You can keep that too, it'll make a perfect coaster for your can of Dr.Swill.

I'm pretty sure working copies of at least a few tracks were leaked on the internet around 2004 or so (I remember a copy being forwarded to the college radio station I used to volunteer in), although I think they were "non-accidental" leaks... some record companies allegedly "leak" pre-release versions of albums to gauge public interest in an act. Could be the case that the lukewarm reception of the leaked tracks (it hardly made a ripple in the downloading community) made the record execs think twice about releasing the album in its then-current condition.

Protomorph

by the time this comes out, there WILL be democracy in China.  <_<

At this point, I think it would be best for everyone if Axl quietly went away to never resurface. This Chinese Democracy project has been so built up that it is impossible to live up to its own hype.

They reached their pinnacle with the 'Use Your Illusion' discs, should never have released the Spaghetti Incident, and need to slink away now into rock obscurity. Axl has done a bang-up job of destroying his carreer, and I don't think he is capable of fixing it. By that I mean, the Music buying public is perfectly willing to give him another chance at fame, but Axl himself will find a way to sabotage himself again.

GnR's peak was Appetite for Destruction, it was downhill from there. Though I sincerely hope this is the best rock album to ever be released, just for the sake of my friend who is a GnR fan.

Comic book equivelents would be some of Kevin Smith's more recent work, Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk, and some of Jeph Loeb's books. Though none of those have nearly as much milage in years.

Isn't younger generations latching onto "old people stuff" called "retro"?

I very much disagree, but I'm not about to try to become the guy who won a debate with Captain Spud.

Really? I was hoping for the world of "Firefly" to become a reality.  :P

oh how about the extra-special last issue of Planetary!

I think the whole project should be scrapped due to this terrible pun from the linked article:

I noticed that and wrote it off as a typo as i find are far too prevalent on internet news sites, plus i couldn't give the writer THAT much credit even if it was a terrible pun.

I liked GNR alright when I was young, but i was more into Motley Crue and since Vince Neil and Axel were like arch enemies i couldnt like GNR that much.

The only thing i have to say about the new album is: I can't wait for my Dr. Pepper to arrive so Axel better get on his horse.

Is it a Steel horse which he rides?

Wouldn't it be a more appropriate question to ask if he rides a "Dead Horse"?

Exercise caution Goggles.  Men have been killed around these parts for quoting that song you referred to...

I agree with BAD, Guns and Roses wasn't a terrible band, but Axl Rose isn't a good singer, person, or father (if he has kids). Scott Weiland is a very good singer and I'd rather listen to Slash on Velvet Revolver than Guns N Roses any day of the week. Even on National Listen to Guns and Roses or Get Kicked in the Groin Day.
