I am getting caught up with this series and then stopped dead in my tracks at issue 7. Hyperion was getting his arse kicked my Redstone and Knighthawk shows up to help. The story never continues into Hyperion vs Nighthawk so I'm left wondering what the hell happened. How did they beat Redstone?

Aaaaah .... this started off as my favourite series, but it suffered a really grisly death :(

Basically, JMS (the writer) decided that he wasn't enjoying writing the book anymore, following some flack he was getting from critics about the series when it moved from being Supreme Power (MAX) to Squadron Supreme (all ages). So he just stopped writing it before the battle was resolved! :(

The next time we see the Squadron Supreme is during "Ultimate Power", their world has been heavily hit by a super-virus engineered by Emil Burbank and the US government, killing tens of millions of people. The SS believe Ultimate Reed Richards is responsible, leading to a huge battle with The Hulk, Fantastic Four, X-Men and The Ultimates, as well the Earth 616 version of the Squadron Supreme (!). It ends with Zarda (who apparently didn't die during the battle with Redstone) going to the Ultimate universe and Ultimate Nick Fury staying in the SS universe. It isn't a great story :(

Howard Chaykin is continuing where JMS left off in a new series soon, with a new artist (no Gary Grank :( ).

Wow, what a shame, I was really loving this series. I read Ultimate Power and enjoyed it but I have a question about Nick Fury. Didn't he lose his arm back in Ultimates volume 2?

Previsionary

ultimate power is full of continuity issues so don't strain your brain trying to place it anywhere exactly. Anyway, SQUADRON SUPREME 2 #1 is coming out, I think, next month or in June so you can pick up on what happened to them and Nick fury after Ultimate Power.

I have the two Supreme Power MAX hardcovers ... they're a great read. Marvel really handled this book quite poorly, and I have a feeling Chaykin is going to a terrible job taking over from JMS. Incidentally, JMS's recent film script work includes Clint Eastwood's The Changeling, Ninja Assassin, World War Z and Silver Surfer. Cool guy.
