Problem bringing up menu and objectives

So I installed Freedom Force and patched it to 1.3, but I seem to have an odd problem. Every so often I become incapable of opening any menus, for example if I press ESC or O nothing happens. I can fix the problem temporarily  by reinstalling the patch before I play, but I am wondering if there is a more permanent solution.

Weird bug. System caching issue, maaaayybe? What's your operating system? Are you set as administrator?
