Pulp Fiction for FF

I've played the Agent of Truth mission and won (I'm pretty sure) twice now.  But when the scene fades out, it just goes to a blacked out map and does not advance.  I can still "move" and interact with objects if I stumble across them, but the screen is totally black.  Is this a bug, or am I missing something?

Went back and loaded "black out" save - got lit map, but no baddies, no clickable objects that I can find . . .

No help?  Does somebody at least know who made the mod?  Are they still an active member?

HI! It's me again...

RMT, if I remember correctly, made this mod. He has a thread on page 2 or 3 of the mods forum that you might want to bump and I recall seeing him around last week. Anyway, since i've YET to play this mod on ff1 or ffvttr, no tips for ya, but you might want to check out the thread anyway as I remember RMT + other posters describing problems + fixes. That problem, however, sounds like you ran into an error that may be scripting related, so it always helps to play the mission, run into the error again, and to post your script (and sometimes FF) log so that the coder can figure out how to help you best.

I'll send you a bill. :P

rmt

I'm around but an out-of-control personal life is keeping me from doing much more than reading the releases thread.  I'm also a bit burnt out on the game right now as I just finished a 150 level, 4gb mod for the 8 people that still play FF1 (Tommy must be kept happy at all costs; gotta love the maps).

All that said, follow Previsionary's instructions and I'll see if I can figure out what is going wrong.  I'll need to know which version you're playing (FF1 I assume from the thread title) and perhaps some more specific information on what level this is, as I haven't touched that mod in quite a long time.

OK - 1) when are you releasing that monster mod?

2) I restarted the mission (I'm getting quite good at it by now - didn't even need the hero point!).  I did save and quit in order to check the various script.log and etc because I didn't know if they would go to the general FF file or some place under Pulp Fiction.  If that makes a difference, and data was lost from the logs, let me know and I'll run the mission in one sitting.

Here's the script.log: [spoiler]>>> system/init.py executed

The FF.err was empty.

The mission is The Truth Hurts where we are introduced to the Question/Shadow character the Truth.  We're supposed to defeat all the gang members - a mob of about 40 (thank goodness for the hypnotizing cloud!).  Once I defeat the last gang member, the screens blacks out as if the scenario is going to end, but then it kind of stalls at just a totally blacked out map.  It's the FF1 version and I do have a fully patched version of FFX and EZFx installed.

1) Technically the answer is Monday, but for all intents and purposes, I'm not releasing it.  I'm burning DVD's this weekend to send to a handful of people at my cost Monday.  It's just too big to ask Alex (or anyone really) to host.  I don't know what it would zip to, but unzipped, I had to squeeze it to get it on a DVD.  Also, I can't take the chance of offending someone with it.  It has over 650 characters.  At the risk of offending someone with this comment, I just don't have the time to track down every creator for 650 meshes, skins, skopes, hexes, etc.and get their permission.  I'm also told my Airman (Centaur Comics character from the 40's) violates some sort of rule because I skoped a rocket onto a male wings and I guess that's a no-no.  Had I known before I did it, I could have either ignored Airman or more likely used a Tommyboy base rather than Beyonder, but at the end of the day, it's too much hassle, especially dealing with people I don't know.   :banghead:  I should have just had Tom make every mesh since he probably made the most, but that seemed like needless re-work, plus I enjoyed making some of the meshes and skopes, as much of a hack as I am at that.  I had included readme credits where available, but after the skoping comment, gave up that it would possibly not offend someone if I released it.  I think it's a shame that no one else will see it since it would make a very useful base file for anyone who wanted to make a real mod (this one is plotless, being just pre-programmed battles among the various teams and companies reflected in the large cast).  But, I don't want trouble with anyone and I don't want to cause some mesher or skinner or whomever to walk away.  I remember the month of unsuccessfully begging a modder to help me after a skin of his got credited to someone he really didn't like instead of to him.  He came around, but I still get reminded of that incident and it's been years...

2) This RegTimer error is the "real" error and should be easily fixable.  I'd say how surprised I am no one found it before now, except... to my great surprise, my copy STILL works correctly even with the error.  But it should not be "RegTimer" it should be "regTimer" and capitalization matters immensely in python.  I think if we fix this, your copy will work.  Still wondering how on earth mine does, though.  Oh, and for those coming after us, yes, it's also broken on the FFvTTR version.  Two ways to fix.

Option A: Open the pulpfiction\Missions\mission4 folder.  Open mission.py using notepad or some other vanilla text editor -- can't be anything that formats.  Look about 2/3 down the file until you see code that starts with:

def Ending():

Down 3 lines from there is the offending capital R.  Make it say regTimer instead of RegTimer, save, and I'm betting it will fix your problem. Make sure it saves it back as mission.py and not .txt.

Option B: PM me an e-mail address and I will send you a new mission.py file.  Replace your old file in pulpfiction\Missions\mission4 and you should be all set.  Just in case the thought of editing a python file intimidates you or you feel like you've messed something up in doing so.

If neither solution fixes you, let me know and we'll try other things, but should be the problem.  Oh, and I should have said earlier but your script log should always be in the root freedom force directory, even if you're playing a mod.

FYI, on the enemies, there should only (only?!) be 24.  It only feels like 40.   :D  They do have lower priority commands to kill each other (since they're rival mobs) and higher priority commands to kill you.  If you take advantage of the terrain, you can sometimes get them to kill each other even without the hypnotic cloud, though it certainly helps.

You can often keep them off of you by luring them into narrow channels and shooting someone in the middle of the pack with pistol volley -- in FF1, I prefer underpowering it which saves your energy and tends to hit others besides the target once the target is knocked over.  I deeply lament that vttr doesn't seem to allow underpowered attacks, one of the reasons I rarely support its format since it forecloses an important strategic option, same as the double overpower attack.

Otherwise, it's basically an energy management level.  You have superior abilities but use your energy relatively quickly.  They have superior numbers and occasionally superior firepower.  But if you can take out the guys with guns and avoid getting dogpiled, it's a relatively easy level, as one overpowered Bitter Harvest attack will get about any thug out of your hair b/c of it's knockback; and two of those will kill about anyone.

Previsionary

rmt, is it possible that you were attempting to use Dr. Mike's version of regtimer? I know he has a copy of it in FFX, but I don't remember if it was named "RegTimer" or "regTimer2"...eh.

Anyway, there was an underpower + overpower script made by Ian, but I guess no one saved a copy of any of his scripts. Tis a shame, no? :(

I can host it, no problem.  Got loads of webspace.  More than enough.

Now the permissions thing is a little harder, but I'm betting that we could get some volunteers to sort it all out and replace anything that couldn't be released.  Up to you, though.

As Previsionary implied, the reason it works for you and not UY is likely that you have FFX 2.x installed and UY doesn't. With it installed, the game will see RegTimer and use the FFX version. Without it installed, the game will see RegTimer and not recognize it, since it only knows about regTimer.

(RegTimer2 is my variation, also in FFX, though I don't recall if it made it into 2.x.)

Uncle Yuan

Now I don't understand . . . I'm running the most current FFX for FF1 from Dr. Mike's site.  Is there something newer/better?  If so, where do I get it?

rmt

Not sure.  I know I had some version of FFX working to use pull attacks, etc. (you can verify FFX is playing nicely on your end by using Six Gun Sam's pull attack in the first level; if it hypnotizes instead of pulls, it's not, otherwise you're good as far as the mod is concerned at least).

I had not intentionally used RegTimer but it's nice to know Stumpy had my back anyway.   :D  Making it regTimer should fix the problem Uncle Yuan; if not, let me know.

To Cat: I'm shocked the size isn't off-putting but that's a very cool offer.  I'm sure an installer would shrink it some -- didn't do one yet since I was already burning it to disc and it fit.  Let me see what the guys I'm sending it to say in terms of whether it's ready or still needs some bugs stomped out.  I'll also see how they feel about Marvel Wars (100 level, Marvel-only characters) being released.  It was promised to be exclusive to E2P but that was also primarily driven by the hosting and permission issues; it isn't quite as compelling as COFE in terms of the cast but it's a little more polished in terms of getting rid of bugs (and Tom added skyspheres to the maps for me, which I then recycled for COFE).

Assuming one or both mods are ready to be released into the wild, then it's just the permission issue.  I can't see me making the effort, as the lack of "fortune" for the project makes "fortune and glory" seem fairly unappealing as far as payoffs go.  But I'm all for other people doing that work...

I'm literally moving this week and starting a new job out of state next Monday.  Let me get settled and then I can see about either uploading a copy if I have decent Internet at my corporate housing, or more likely, burning and mailing you a copy.  You could then decide if it's worth rounding up volunteers and giving up the space/bandwidth.  Either way, though, thanks for the kind offer.

Yeah - I had the hypnotize thing.  Also the Scotish guy with the staff had an error of a similar type with an attack that I think was supposed to freeze and wound up hypnotizing.

rmt

Well I'm not precisely sure how to fix the problem, but it sounds like your FFX is not working, at least with my mod.  The Professor is probably trying to use a crystallize attack (going by memory) -- I think he has a mind blank attack, but not a hypnotize.  Six Gun Sam definitely does not have a hypnotize, but rather a pull attack with his lasso.

Anyone hazard a guess why ffx worked for me and for others but not Uncle?

Uncle Yuan

Hmmm . . . I installed it, but Vista put it in the virtual track and not the "main" track.  I'll move it and see if that helps.  I wonder if this has aything to do with the mission in question.

rmt

Did you change the RegTimer to regTimer?  The mission isn't ending now b/c I used the wrong case.  No one else reported it because the capital R version exists as a part of FFX -- but your FFX isn't working so this level won't end for you.  This is probably the only mission that is affected b/c the capital R was a typo on my part, not an intentional effort to call the ffx version of the command, although it's possible I made the same mistake elsewhere.  Fixing the R should fix your immediate problem and let you advance to the next level, but you're not really experiencing the mod as it was intended without ffx since your powers are functioning differently -- for example, the first level would be much easier with hypnotize than with a pull attack.  I don't know how to fix your ffx problem but if you want to get the most out of the mod, that's what needs fixed.

Do you know if ffx works for you in the main game or in other mods?  Just wondering if whatever is wrong is specific to Pulp Fiction or just happens to be how a larger problem was discovered.

Riddlemethis

Uncle Yuan

I finally got back to trying this again.  I still apparently cant run Pulp Fiction w/FFX.  I installed FFX twice now, and despite directing it to the main Irrational folder, it always winds up in the Virtual folder.  The shortcuts (both FF and PF), however, point to the main folder.  (Both with the proper -log suffix.)

Things I may try:
Install PF in the virtual folder
Redirect shortcuts to virtual folder

Any thoughts?

edit: Tried to redirect shortcut, but virtual pathway does not have the executable files - all the data and saves, but no -exe

rmt

Sorry, not offhand I don't.  I don't know much about Vista.  My wife has Vista on her laptop and I know I got FF running on it one time, but I never tried to get the mods/FFX working.  I don't know much about virtual paths either.  Perhaps someone more Vista-literate can get you going.  I would say Pulp Fiction won't be nearly as fun without ffx.  You could try playing through while ignoring attacks like the Lariat Pull or Judo Throws, as I think fixing the regTimer error in the one level should get you much further.  But you will miss some of the flavor and strategies, obviously.

Epimethee

Uncle Yuan, if for some reason* the FFX installer refuses to install in the proper path ("Vista Virtual folder"? I take it those are dynamic search results folders?), you could try installing to an arbitrary folder (say, create one on the desktop) and copy the files from there to the Freedom Force directory, overwriting files as needed (back up first!) You'll probably need to change where the FFX shortcut points, too.

*I guess Vista frowns upon old-school installers.

He has "64 bit", keep that in mind.

*clarifying so there's no baseless vista bashing. ^^*

Epimethee

Not bashing Vista* – I have no real first-hand experience of it. It's not exactly surprising that an installer conceived for Windows 98/XP would have issues with an OS 5-10 years more recent. I think non-.MSI installers are not considered kasher anymore. (BTW, any issue with the FFX 3.2 or 3.3 installers?)

*The fact that non-system paths would be so different between localizations and between 32/64 is still rather puzzling, though.

Uncle Yuan

I'm not really sure what's going on behind the curtain.  I directed the install to the "real" program files and it seemed to install there, but at some point it appears to move to the virtual path.  The 64-bit Vista seems to keep the executable programs down the traditional pathway, but the saves down the virtual one.  I have no idea why it feels that FFX needs to go virtual vs. traditional, but it appears that this move is keeping it from being usable.

TJHoenecke

Is there a walkthrough available for Pulp Fiction?  I'm playing the FF version, and I can't survive the first mission with the dreameater ants, and I get the feeling it might only get worse from here....  :(
