Hi guys and gals,

I just re-downloaded DDS Converter 2 in order to convert my TGAs to DDS format for FFVTTR....But it doesn't seem to want to convert anything.

Could it be Windows Vista isn't allowing it to work?  I know I've had to move certain things to the desktop in order to edit them, sometimes, because of Vista's security settings....If this is the case, does anybody know how the heck I can disable the security settings on my files and folders?

Thank you.

If you could, can you explain more about your problem. Do you get any errors? What are your settings? Etc. DDS Converter may need to have its setting changed to convert some things. I can't say for sure until I re-download the file later on. Also, if you're administrator, you shouldn't have many problems doing anything. If user control is on, you may have to turn that off (but it barely affects anything, it just asks for permission to run/use anything) and you can always right click the program and select "run as an administrator" just to make sure.

Dana, you might want to give these Legacy DDS Utilities a go.  They contain the command line executable readDXT, which "reads compressed images [e.g., DDS] and writes .TGA files."  I haven't tested it on Vista, for I don't have a system running Vista, but it might work for you.  The one problem may be that you will generate numerous TGAs (in decreasing proportions, all the way down to 1x1 pixels :o) for each DDS you convert, when you might only want one TGA.  That means that if you convert a 512x512 DDS to TGA you will produce a 512x512 TGA, a 256x256 TGA, a 128x128 TGA, a 64x64 TGA, a 32x32 ... and a 1x1 TGA.  :banghead:

The only other option I can think of is using gimp + the DDS plugins to Save As TGA.

Yes sadly it's vista that stops it working. They might have released an update now, but otherwise the CmD line program made by Nvidia is pretty good.

I'm starting to despise Vista...really.  Thank you so much, Prem, Ow and LM...I will try your sugestions for alternate DDS programs.

Prem, as for my exact problem...I open the DDS convertor and attempt to highlight and convert TGAs to DDS, but the convert button never becomes active...I've tried all I know to do...I even tried converting one at a time, but it will not let me convert anything (not TGA to DDS, not DDS to TGA, etc...).

We were (thankfully) able to save all of our stuff (game files, mods that I'm working on, music, videos including my movie projects, pics, etc...) when our old computer died a horrible death...We bought a new comp, but I just wish we had Windows XP still.  Vista is a pain (it makes you double okay most things before installing or using them (sometimes) or moving folders and files, stops some programs from working altogether, etc...Etc...).  The last thing I need is more hold-ups to getting my mod finished (I'm starting to think it's cursed).

Thanks again for the assistance, you guys are the best.

It's odd, because you are one of the first vista people I've talked to (that's actually used vista) who doesn't like it. A lot of people hated it from the outset but when they used it it grew on them. I really like it; Miles better than xp, it's neater, faster, easier and it's only a few minority programs that don't work.

You know that stupid "double ok" thing can be turned off right? it's of no use to an administrator, better for clients on a network.

Yes, it can be turned off. I described that you might have to turn that off in my above statement. It's a security measure that double checks that you really "want" to do something. Not exactly a bad thing, but can be annoying for experienced users which is why you have the option of turning it off (control panel). :P

Alas, I haven't installed the converter yet...I'll do it when...um...I'll do it one day just to check. :P
