I haven't played the console versions of Rainbow Six but in the original, more strategic-minded, squad-based PC games (Rainbow Six, Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear, and Rainbow Six: Raven Shield), I generally defaulted my teams with the MP5SD5 submachine gun. Most of the combat in the campaign involves ranges of less than 50 metres, so the gun's short effective range isn't a real drawback, and the integral silencer means enemies won't know you're attacking until it's too late. When I need more range or firepower (against opponents with body armour, for example), I go with the AK-47 or the G36K. I hardly ever use the other firearms except for the novelty.
