I am seriously contemplating buying a Wii this Christmas.  The question is, what are the can't miss games?  I prefer adventure type games, and have never been a fan of twitch games, but truth be told I have NEVER owned a console.  So I'm open to suggestions.  I've pretty much decided to get the Zelda title, and am leaning strongly towards the Marvel Ultimate Alliance (I've always wanted to play it).

And then?

If you get MUA, make sure you have a classic controller or a Gamecube controller.  Under no condition play it with the Wii-mote.  The control scheme is abysmal.  On another note, the Lego games (Star Ward, Indiana Jones, Batman) are all really fantastic.  I've also been playing Super Smash Bros., which is VERY awesome, and I'm not a fan of fighting games.

Depends but for me any title by Nintendo (Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros), No More Heroes, an number of Gamecube titles that are extremely cheap, Boom Blox, the Strong Bad Wiiware games, Mega Man 9, Wario Land, Lego Batman, Bully, Trauma Center, The Godfather, and I really loved Zak and Wiki and it is super cheat.

If you like Zelda, Okami is a really good bet. Resident Evil 4 and No More Heroes are both awesome games on the more mature side of things. Nintendo titles are usually a safe bet. I own both Super Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Galaxy and love them. Guitar Hero: World Tour just came out and it sweet.

Also, buy a couple Wii Points cards. There are SO many great classic games and Wii-ware games available for download.

I'd also recommend Super Smash Bros Brawl, Mariokart, Super Mario Galaxy etc but think it worth trying stuff you might not think your 'cup of tea', too.
Smooth Moves is great fun with a bunch of friends, I have really gotten to like the Tiger woods golf games (09 lets you play online too), and I don't like golf, or golf games. Wii fit is also fun. I would not have thought I'd like any of these, but they have become favourites.
It's a different kind of play to what we associate with videogames/consoles/computers, and loathe though I am to use words like 'paradigm', it really does change how you think about playing videogames. Actually swinging a controller to play golf or tennis, punching in boxing games, leaning into skiing games with the wii fit, it's all much, much more enjoyable than you would ever expect from observing it or reading about it.
Now it's been out for a while the second hand games are around meaning that you can try some titles without paying an arm or leg, so it's actually better to get one now than a year ago.
Plus, you can use your wiimote to control the Pc if you are into that, which could potentially add a lot to a lot of games on the pc.

The Hitman

I'd like to add, if you go the hook- up- to- the- internet route, the "Sam & Max" series is a great downloadable game. Same goes for "Strong Bad's Awesome Game For Cool People."

Mowgli

Boom Blox
Super Mario Strikers (soccer)
Mario Kart Wii

Cool Game for Attractive People, and Sam & MAx is great, but especially picks up around episode 4.

Yes, and I've baked you a large strawberry cheesecake to enjoy with your family and friends but it's on my end of the information superhighway so I'm just going to eat it.
