So i felt uninspired lately and the holiday season made me rusty from drawing. So i heard one tip is to go back and revisit an old drawing in hopes of picking up steam. I feel like it kind of worked but i am soo lazy when it comes to this background.

So yeah consider this a wip and the original which was done two or three years ago is here. Which you can see here.

I am redrawing this piece weirdly like slowly going through the piece and reinking it and redrawing specific parts and placeing them in. Very frankstienish

While I like the layout of the piece I feel that her expression is just too... "meh". The expression on her face conveys "Sigh, what's next?". I don't know if that is what you were going for.

I posted roughs and layouts on this board before here are some polished pages.  I am constantly scanning for tangents and parts where inkers are going to have a hard time. If you see any of the above please tell me.I need fresh eyes. There is one more page ...page 6 but forsome reason i can never pull the last page off quite the way i want :(

It all looks incredibly professional Ink - The sense of speed that you give flash is cool especially on the top of page 5 where he's racing on the mountain & the bottom right of page 2 - the smile of on Flash's face is priceless & the tornado effect looks cool - I always have a hard time drawing wing myself but, yours looks great

I will elaborate a little bit - I'm not much of an artist so I will leave the art critique to those better qualified.  (Although I think it looks fantastic.)

As a reader, there are a couple of parts that don't track well and thus don't make sense.  And they are all in the segment where he is fighting the giant . . . armadillo?

On page three, panels 2 to three and three to four aren't clear to me.  How did Flash wind up on the ground?  And then from there, how did he wind up on top of the foot?  Then the big question - after he gets stomped on, how is it that he appears on the farm?  In the first two transition it just looks like there are a panel or two missing between the gaps.  I suspect the foot stomp is contextual and we just don't see the part that explains that in this sample.  If not, that too needs to be expanded upon.

On a plus side - I love the expression on the thingie's face in the last panel when Flash snatches his bottle!

THey are crappy digital inks. more like clean up

and the start of the flats.
I have never colored OR inked any of my seqs pages ever! So this is really slow for me. I decided to do this so i can see what the colorist and inker is going through. I already decided to draw cleaner next time \

Yeah i think thats a problem page. Clarity isn't that great. I'll have to see what i can do.
I am a reaching point where thought i love working on these my tolerance for redoing pages or frustration for poor planning really drains my motivation :(

but yeah i forgot to  mention how  hard coloring and not to mention ink.

omg colorist have it so hard.Flatting, palette choices and light sources. I'm sure it gets easier with time but yeah this is the first and last page for LONG time! :whistlin:

lol WHO knew coloring you own stuff was so much damn work?
Seriously who knew and didn't tell me?

I think with the border these pages would look allot better. Like i planned the composition a little tighter but just colored all the way past the dotted lines

Amen to that - Coloring has never been my cup of tea - I always preferred to draw with pencil & my fav part - The part that's actually fun comes when I get to ink something i have finished drawing - So I salute you on your coloring efforts because like the drawings they look professional & is something I would purchase at the O'l comic shop especially if it has the Flash involved  Thanks for the Free Art!

Those colors are absolutely incredible. I love the contrast between the background and Flash. He appears so dynamic in every panel.

Are you using a tablet for these colors? If so, what settings do you use (brushes and/or overlays)?

Good old iceman.

Iceman rock consistency was pretty hard for me to figure out, must have drawn countless ice objects lol . I know it just ice but for some reason it wasn't coming out as easy i hope. I took inspiration from the comics and took the ice aura Adam /Andy Kubert used to indicate ice was emitting from his hand but stylized it up a bit and studios even rotate it in some episodes.

Boyd kirkland had wanted a big ice flash in the front so the animators could "cheat" the ice slide and not have to animate it forming. Worked out well except when the footage came back the ice flash looked a little flat. In the future I will do another view for them.

I guess loss in translation :)

The iceman figure (BOTTOM) in motion is drawn by one of our character designers. It could have been anyone from AJ, Khary,Steve gordon or even Boyd. Not sure who, but it helped me sell the ice beam. SO credit goes to them . The backgrounds are also from the series stock of the danger room.

Storm i guess is next lol

Good old Storm, these are all the effects i  did for her for all 26 episodes.  Rain hail and other effects are all weather based and don't have to be color keyed.

Again, the character models are what the production provided us to use. Character designs could have been done by Steve Gordon, Khary, AJ or even Boyd. It's a very collaborative effort as you can already tell.

Boyd my producer who taught me basically as i was hired on was that the word DX stand for double exposure and that if i wanted a glow that's what i would use ^_^

I did the color keys when I could, but when it got too busy i had lot of help from the other colorist on the show.  Allot of things got lots in translation as you can see as the show progresses but yeah these were my contribution to storm ^_^

Ink, Congrats on making it to the big show... and especially one that our community was already keeping a close eye on. Now we just know where to catch your work making an appearance.

However, It brings up an insteresting question... So who is going to make versions of these FXs for FF? And I still find it funny that someone who started doing art for FF goes on to find a career and then is now making stuff that people will want to see made for FF. Does that mean that Kinetics designs from his Danger Room mod might find it's way into the show if he talks to the right people?

SO yeah i paused on the mutant side of things to post some other stuff from the main title sequence.

The original design was based off James lim and i did a redraw of the head so we could get a damaged version for wolverine to cut off. I had his eyes shut off in the instructions but the sequence was too fast and they took liberties with it.

Also in the start of the intro we have two mutants i did as background mutants for Future episodes. I call them hellboy junior and over weight fish man. See if you can find them and not hellboy isn't red in the intro. These are redress of character designs by i think khary.Whos amazing by the way

and some lasers to shoot angel down with . Tada intro effect .fin!

Back

I'm pretty sure that I missed any previous references you had to developing the character many many posts back... but what was his background story anyway? Besides being the Hawaiian Forge who could run at super speed (including up walls), generate kinetic waves by spinning his hands fast, and taking movement energy from one opponent and transferring it as speed to an ally. All I've ever had to go by was the hero file that came with the Danger Room mod... no other background.

Heck, I even had a friend of mine make one of those superhero avatars of the character just to add him as a member of a X-Men team in a story that never finished...

Yeah he was one of my mod exclusive. I didn't really make that much of a background for him, X-men felt like they pulled mutants from all over the world and hawaii was missing one. Honestly i just wanted a mutant to show case my danger room devices. lol

Now there is Loa the other Hawaiian mutant. matter dissolution. Maybe they took surfing lesson together

I guess Morrison team was in at that time, I think right now i see him hanging out with the new x-men, maybe fight exliar off for his love. Yeah i  guess he was the X-men resident flash. Lol my ideas weren't always great. lol

I'll be curious to see what new look you might give him since the New X-Men uniform is no longer used.. and especially if you have him pop up in a episode of the new series. I love keeping Kinetics as the resident speedster since Quicksilver is typecast as a non-team player and usually making trouble in the Avengers titles and Surge has vanished since the school shut down except for her one short story dealing the aftermath of the Purifiers/Messiah deal...

Love the poison ivy and clayface, i think the background seals the whole thing together for me. It is the perfect blend of nature. Great Job!

Haven't peeked into this thread in a while...

Awesome piece ink, but I prefer the un-coloured image (that's just me though, I'm not too fond of overt filter application over standard pen-and-ink illustrations... just a matter of personal taste, mind you).

Ink, I'm a fan of your x-men meshes, and now i'm a fan of your newer art. I think it's great that you've gotten into the animation business. Congratulations. I hope others here are able to follow your lead.

so i been MIA in for about two months. I had gone to south east asia and drawing on the go was hard and no internet. I came back and i have all these commissions i still have to do but i have this special project due in two days. It's a gears of war pinup of a Marcus and a new female fighter.

Ever since i came back I've been rusty and i am posting because i always do my best work when i get some critiques and some input.

So hack away!

LAYOUTA
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/ink4884/Drone2.jpg)
I think i like the wide screen but not enough energy in the characters?
LAYOUTB
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/ink4884/drone5.jpg)
Marcus in front but the shilloute pose is kind of lame, thoughts?
LAYOUTC
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/ink4884/drone6.jpg)
LAYOUTD
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/ink4884/drone7.jpg)

The two character are so the same platform, i think the studio might think i can't draw feet so i might have to change this

Less of a wide shot and the girl in front, i like drawing girls more but Marcus is the flagship character of gears.

It's just thumbs right now that i am trying to solidify so i can quickly move on to the next step.  I want the viewer to feel the  swarm and that these two guys have no way out of it but. Does that convey in this piece?

I want the guy in midair to be shot to be pieces so i can show i can draw blood and gore and the background is a broken highway so that way i can show some background depth with some swarming monsters shooting them from high ground.

The main character is the man but the newest character is the female , thoughts on who should be in the front?
Thoughts on anything would be great and thanks for looking, look bellow for more thumbs!

Some cheesy gun poses, do these feel forced? Also do any stand out as better poses as the one i already placed in the layout?

Some of my background and character positioning thumbs

every time i submit i think i over think the piece and don't have enough fun . So tell me if i am overthinking or am i crazy and these all look horrible. lol

Thanks for the all private pms! This fourm still feel like homebase to me

I came across allot of road bumps today, when i started to render the characters in my previous layout , there designs were so muddled because they were sooo tiny and these character designs have  AMILLION of components . SO i did quick new pinup.

Lazy yes , but at least this one was going the way i want it too.
So i wil have to rethink my strategy cause this one is obviously lackin some action but i can also do a separate pinup for that.

Lookin' good so far Ink. ;) I don't think that the poses that you posted previously look cheesy. The poses are pretty dynamic and have that "over the top" comic feel to 'em. I think that I like the third one the best of the four.

Wow, your project is definitely developing quickly and beautifully. I especially enjoy the rough and ready nature of the characters, which is really heightened by your designs - as well as the facial expression which emerged on the villainous character on the left of the action shot.

I'm looking forward to seeing the final images, and good luck with the job.

(Also, the card gave me a good chuckle)

too bad I'm in such a slump lately. I think they look too stiff so after finishing two pieces i want to redo them.

IMO if you had slightly twisted the knife in the figures left hand (HIS left) it would have produced a better image. This would have made the left (readers right) knife appear at a sharper angle thus differentiating it from the knife in the right (readers left) hand.

Stage directions are hard...

The perspective on the scoreboard might be a little wonky.
The big guy on the left - not sure where his right and left feet are?  Are they beyond the horizon?  He looks like he might be crawling out of a hole.
Both ladies on the right - Do they have left arms?  It doesn't look bad as is, and I'm assuming you want the viewer to think they are behind the bodies, rather than an oversight.
Can't really find any serious issues.
This is a really professional looking piece so far.  I like seeing the heavier pencils approach.
Very nice.

Really nice, Ink.  That's something I'd like to read.  You are improving by leaps and bounds, and you were already very good.  The marguee is really nice (but her name is mispelled) and the theatre with orchestral pit is really nice.  Clayface is very well done and very compelling.

Out of curiosity, how do you ink?  Pen and ink or a computer program?

Thanks.

Very nice Silver Samurai! The piece looks like it'll be fantastic. There is one thing that you'll need to address as I know it's a WIP...the sword hilt for the katana (I think it's called "tsuka") is way too short. It should be much longer. ;)
Title: Re: Ink's art block-new x-men
Post by: Mowgli on August 04, 2009, 06:36:34 PM
Ink: Beatufiul as always. Your Silver Samurai actually reminds me of the work of Ingres. I know that sounds like a stretch, but follow me: Ingres supported himself not by his paintings, but by his portrait drawings. These drawings often had a great deal of attention give to the faces and hands, with less to the bodies or clothes. You, like him, can make that strange combination work very well. Well done sir.  :)

Yeah yeah. These are all nice and everything but I wanna know when you're gonna finish up on the Shiar Meshes for FF? JK. Dude, this is awesome. I tell people I know that one of the boys I used to kinda converse with does work on Wolverine and the X-Men. They are all impressed. Gratz man on your hard work coming to pay off now.

SUperboy, wondergirl, robin and kid flash. Than i'll just draw one of the comp i deas you have.
Like them standing or flying or going to beach or something lol

Really like the newest pencil sketch and the highlighter and sharpie pice. - Could be interesting to combine both techniques.

Also the newest piece reminds me somewhat of David Downton's work in the use of colour, and in the way some areas are devoid of black and the way detail in not necessarily drawn but is suggested. I might be reading a bit too much into it, but I really like it nonetheless. Fantastic job!

Just thought you'd be interested in seeing what a review site said about your art:

Quote from: http://www.comicsbulletin.com/reviews/126085301240682.htm
Comments: I'm not sure why cover artist Daniel Luvisi chopped up Alice's body and set her severed torso atop her disjointed legs, but the biggest black tutu in the world isn't enough to cover up the feeling that something's gone very wrong with her body. An odalisque she is not in this example of photo-reference gone horribly wrong.

But Nguyen fares much better inside, capturing clear personalities for Cat and Shot out of their costumes (but no less deadly, of course, as these two alpha dudes have made self-confidence their defining trait). Nguyen also has fun with Alice's powers, as we see Phantom Stranger Alice, Blue Demon Alice, and even Silver Banshee Alice at one point. She's a powerhouse who steals any magic she likes, but Simone makes it clear that she's also undisciplined and deeply in need of guidance. That no one sees that so well as Bane is one of Simone's insights into these DC-underside characters. Bane's simple respect for "Child Alice" as she makes a typically brutal, reckless life choice is the one thing that could have reached her, and stop her from attacking the team.

Must be quite the confidence booster to know you're getting quite the nice grade on your pencils. ^_^

Was busy with school work the last couple weeks but finally got caught up with my comics this weekend. Was impressed with your Secret Six work Ink, but there was some things I saw that I think you can work on. I'll try to do some scans of specific things sometime this week, but the general thing was to watch your anatomy. You've got a bit of funky style and that's cool, I like it, but there was some shots that looked really awkward. But there was also alot of really great shots too, including a close up of Catman that I really loved.

So I'll get back to you on that. So have you locked up another issue somewhere yet? Or are you still waiting.

Hey Ink, Did you draw the Silent Batman story from the new Holiday special too?
I just noticed your name on a review I read.

EDIT: I just saw on your deviant blog that he is a different guy.
Sorry to hear that, I know what it's like when there are many people with the same name in comics.
My late uncle's name was Erik Larson, and he was a penciller too, did a little mainstream stuff (like Animal Man covers - after Morrison's years) but he eventually moved to Europe to pursue his art.

The only thing that I'll say is that Miss Martian needs "a little love". Maybe make her a little more prominent...she looks a slightly thrown in. ;)

Very nice.

I feel strange because I cant stop looking at the telegraph pole, and the way you've rendered it with the sahding blending into a flat white area, in classic American Illustrator style as aped by Neal Adamas and Bill Sienkiewicz.

The foreground figures are well done too. Nice band-aid. Nice facial expressions.

Damn you're good!

I have been messing with around with inks and doing some ink warmup head shots and heres a page that i like from the latest siren's book.

I really enjoy drawing the rogues and retro classic catwoman , the script didn't call for specific costumes but i thought it was appropriate .

I will be at san diego comic con but i'll be hovering around and if all goes well i should be doing a signing at the dc booth. Mostly though i'll probably be around dustin nguyen's table.

So if you guys head down to san diego let me know! safe travels.

Hey guys!  i just finished one and half issues of sirens and dc lined me up with more gigs so i been very very very busy. I also been freelancing at boom and another studio i can't reveal yet. However i just wanted to say hi  and one day i am going to release all my artwork i've been holding back. Thanks for the support and this community still rocks. I'm very new in the industry and i am learning how to deal with all the way things work like scheduling and critques but i've got though skin so i think i'll be okay. I just wanted to say Hi and say thanks , i seen some of you guys support me on other forums so i appreciate all the kind words. Its just been a nice progression from doing skins to doing comics that inspire skins  and i cant wait to see where i go from here!

btw there are two of us named peter nguyen(working for dc)  so look out. He does awesome batman covers and i'm not even being sarcastic . lol serious

congratulations for your work ink, i like your style, you are already at a very good point now, even if you are not satisfact fully.
Now if i can express an opinion wich reguard a matter of tastes, i think you sometimes draw the angles (of woman faces for example) too "pointy".

Btw, I picked up Incorruptible a few weeks back, and when I got it home I checked out the cover and said, "Wait, that looks familiar."

Very nice work. :D

i think his middle name is B

Also i'm west coast peter and he's east coast peter lol

Just a quick bump: Over at DCWomenKickingAss (http://dcwomenkickingass.tumblr.com/post/32737310606/pndcwomne), the owner featured one of Ink's works, and it's getting some nice feedback.   I think it looks pretty awesome too.

It's great to see Ink's talent being appreciated by one of the big companies out there like DC. I wish him continued success in the comics industry. :)
