Title: Acronym Anarchy
Post by: BentonGrey on December 28, 2016, 08:09:27 PM
Howdy guys, I want to pick the community's collective brain for a minute.  I was writing one of my Into the Bronze Age posts, and I came across a story featuring Aquaman's foes, O.G.R.E., one of that set of acronymed criminal organizations in the vein of SPECTRE and T.H.R.U.S.H. that sprung up all over the place in the 60s.  I was trying to remember which other heroes got these.  I know Hawkman had C.A.W., but which others were around?  Anyone remember?

Cap's villain Flagsmasher was the head of U.L.T.I.M.A.T.U.M.

For DC? There was H.I.V.E (TT villains) and I think C.H.E.C.K.M.A.T.E (if that was an acronym)

T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents had S.P.I.D.E.R., and there was the heroic organization U.N.D.E.R.S.E.A., all from Tower Comics.

I know there were a lot that were used as satire...

Ahh, several good ones, guys.  I don't think that any of those were from that same era, though, other than perhaps Daglob's.  :)

Couldn't find anything that really focused on the one era, but maybe this will at least point you in the right direction: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fictional_espionage_organizations
