The fact that high school and college require everyone to read specific books based on some unknown criteria is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. On top of that, they have to read garbage like Canterbury Tales because... why?
..And driver's ed and computer classes are electives. Nice work there, high school curriculum.

Cantebury Tales....garbage?  Yep, Western civilization is doomed.  We debate this endlessly in the academy, the worth of a canon, what criteria it should have, if it should exist.  I will say that primary education needs a MAJOR reform in America, especially in the way literature is approached.  I will also say that there is value in providing an increasingly diverse and divisive culture with a common frame of reference.  If we read Beowulf, Canterbury Tales, etc., we look at the roots of the culture we live in, whether it is "our" culture or not.  To share a knowledge of these texts is, ideally, to share something that improves us, and gives us common ground on which to build.
