Just got the game yesterday & every time I try & run it I get "alert: CFastHeap::allocate failed, out of main memory"

stumpy

I'm not sure I've seen the game not run right out of the box. How far does it get before the crash? What are your system specs (how much RAM, etc.)?

I press play, the screen goes black & the error message. The weird thing is that I have been able to play the game perfectly before so the specs shouldn't be the problem.

From the stupid recommendations dep't:
Just in case, reboot the system and try to limit as much as possible the number of TSR – err... sorry for the old-man jargon –memory-resident programs before launching the game. failing that, check that your graphic and sound card drivers are up to date.

(Also, as Stumpy said, specs can help a lot.)

Processor: AMD Anthlon 64 X2 Duel Core Processor 3600+ 1.90 GHz
RAM: 1.00 GB
System type: 32 bit Operating System
NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 (just updated the driver)

& of course Windows Vista.

Just to be certain, when you say the error pops up when you press play, you mean that it crashes to desktop with that error message after you first click on the icon to start the game, not after clicking NEW CAMPAIGN or anything, right? The little opening Irrational Games splash screen with Green Genie and the ATI logo and so on never show up, right?

I am not familiar with that graphics card, but your specs look okay. Sometimes Windows updates can change the system configuration. The error you are seeing usually pops up when Windows tells the game that there isn't enough memory to open it. Sometimes I think people have seen that when they have loaded a large number of meshes, maps with too much on them, etc. But, I don't know that I have heard of it from just opening the game fresh from installation.

BTW, is this a fresh installation? (Sorry for so much clarification, but I'm not sure because you said you played it perfectly before (presumably on this same system) but also mention that you just got the game.) You may have gotten a bad install somehow, so a re-install may be worth trying.

So Im going to second the reinstall suggestion.

BEFORE YOU REINSTALL:

I get that message when I have too many objects for my computer's meager memory to handle. I have moved some Hero files to a separate directory, moved little-used meshes into their own directory, and used the "text files that substitute for keyframes" thing. I also terminate any memory resident program that I don't thnk I need while playing the game (memory resident parts of Realplayer, for instance). By saving the character and the Herofiles, I can drop 'em back in the game whenever I want.

This seems to work, but there are still some things (like Private Army) that don't seem to do well.

Now, I have 700-some odd MB of RAM, and 2500 (meshes and Hero files) seems to be my threshold. More memory, and I would suppose that the number would be higher. High-poly mehses would probably have and effect also.

I tried it again & it seems to be working now. Still not sure what the problem was but whatever.
