Recovering files

My desktop just got hit by something and crashed. It's in pretty bad shape now and I'm going to have to reformat.

But before I do I want to try and recover my files. Right now I'm being told that everything inside my users folder is empty or corrupt. I'd like to try and recover those files I can. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can try?

I'm on Windows Vista.

Be sure it's not a virus. I got one a couple of months back that insisted that every file on my hard drive was corrupt. Fortunately, my brother is a computer tech, and he scared it away (after an hour or so worth of work).

Thanks for the warning daglob. I haven't ruled out a virus as the cause just yet but my OS seems pretty scrambled. I was planning to reformat soon anyway so this isn't a big deal.

I think I've managed to recover all of my files now, so I seem to be good to go. Even if I couldn't recover them I wouldn't have lost much of importance. A few skins maybe, most of personal files were already backed up.
