Sound Card Issues

Does anyone happen to run a Soundblaster X-fi Xtreme Audio card? We recently upgraded a customized computer from Windows XP to 7 and the sound has ceased to be. Any attempt to reinstall the drivers (of which I've tried various types from various sources) comes up with the message that no associated hardware is installed. The PCI slot itself is fine, since we can swap our network card and it will work without a problem.

Windows picks up that there is hardware present, though, which is the weird thing, and will automatically install drivers by itself. On device manager, the icon comes up with a yellow exclamation mark and the automatic fixy wizard is fruitless.

I've seen people having trouble with the card and 7 online, but it doesn't seem to be like the problem I'm having.

Edit: A few more details from endless driver re-installations and various other messing abouts: I installed a VIA Envy24 sound card and had similar issues, as well as with the onboard sound, Realtek AC97. I seem to be able to get drivers to install if I push them or make them compatible, but I still get a yellow exclamation mark in the device manager, a red cross in the tray and the indication that no audio devices are installed under control panel > sound.

Is there some underlying sound issue that I've not been made aware of?

I have that exact same card and it gives me boat loads of trouble. I get the "screeching sound of death" when I play games on my pc. It's crazy, the pc locks up and a loud continuous screech comes out of the speakers. Can't even play FFvTTR anymore. I also get that message when trying to update drivers.
