3D Studio Max Question

Over the years I've read that only version 4, 5, or 5.1 can be used to create/export/whatever animations for FF and FFvTR.  Why is that?  Don't newer versions have the option to "export" as older versions?

i think, and i may be wrong, that the nif max importer/exporter is not up to par with the recent max's. the nifskope importer/exporter may be a fix to that.

Maybe I'll download the free trial and see if it will export to older formats.  It won't cost anything, and maybe it will work.

It doesn't. As little sense as it makes, 3ds max seemingly goes out of its way to invalidate exporters from previous versions.
