Need Help Installing Maps

I just found this site the other day while digging for meshes, skins, etc. for  :ffvstr:. I must say it's quite exciting to know I'm no the only one who still plays this game.
I've found quite a number of meshes and such while scouring the interwebs, and can install them with ease, however, installing maps still eludes me. I know I have to open the mission.ff folder somehow (at least I think that's how you do it) but renaming it to a .zip file and opening doesn't work. Any suggestions?

P.S. Sorry if this is on the wrong forum, I wasn't sure.

Thanks!

Umm yeah...
I guess I wasn't clear enough. This is exactly what I've tried. I rename the file, I click to unzip it some B.S. comes up and then it completes unzipping it (the green loading percentage bar thingy fills up) and then nothing happens. The newly christened missions.zip file is still there.

Oh, the B.S. that comes up is some crap about having to rename files, which i believe is due to the multiple attempts I've made at this. I tried "opening the archive" (at least I think that's what it's called) and copying the appropriate map folders into it, but it either said the file already existed or that there was insufficient space for the file.

Any additional help would be appreciated.

P.S. Sorry if this came off as rude, I just sometimes hate my computer.

Renaming it to a zip should work. When you unzip the file, like any zip, the file is still there after being unzipped. What you should see is a new directory with all the files from the zip in it. Probably a "missions" directory.

If it says that the file needs renaming that when you unzip a second time, that should mean that it worked the first time and you're trying to unzip and copy over the file that's already there.

Opening the zip and getting the already there meassage would also indicate that the unzip worked and the files are there.

If you're still not sure if it worked, hit F3 and do a search on your hard drive for the map file name. If it's there, search will find it.

You might also try unzipping with winrar, if you're not already. It opens zip files as well as rar and I find it more friendly than winzip

Ok I might have gotten the maps on, but I  can't find where to put the texture file. There is no area_specific folder to put it in. I tried creating a new folder and putting them in there but that doesn't work either. Then again, the way I put the maps on was not how you instructed (because it still didn't work) so maybe the area_specific folder is working the maps just aren't there.

I'm not at home to check, but the textures all might be in a common folder in the art.ff file

1) rename to art.zip

2)right click on it to bring up menu

3)from the winzip choice, try "extract to here"

you should see a new folder "art" with all the subfolders in it. One should have all the textures in it for the game

If you look at the link I sent you;

"In order to install maps you will have to have extracted your .ff files. See here for more details"

It says ff files, meaning probably ALL the ff files, not just the missions.

"Some maps might require a textures folder by added as well. They will normally include instructions if this is so. If not, you should place the textures folder in C:\Program Files\irrational games\freedom force vs the third reich\data\art\library\area_specific"

This should be the location of your textures - as you can see its off the art subdirectory.

Checking the link, it tells you to unzip all 8 ff files.

After trying repeatedly to get this working, and even reinstalling the game, I finally gave up and tried it on our other computer. I was met with immediate success so now I'll have to start transferring everything to it (it doesn't have internet). I've had lots of problems with this computer and zip files in general so I guess it just doesn't want to open those files. Thanks anyways for the help!

Glad it worked. If you don't have one, getting a usb flashdrive with a couple of gigs or more is very cheap nowadays and makes transferring files quick and easy.
