What Goes Into An Avataar?

So after seeing Bat's Avatar Request, and after receiving another request for an Avatar, it made me wonder, what goes into developing an Avatar? How does someone decide what they're Avatar will be?

Name?

Powers?

Status (Hero/Villain)?

Costume design?


Basically, if a new member joins the Community, and wants an Avatar to represent themselves in-game, how should they go about creating their Character?

Really, I'd just like to get other members opinions on this, but consider this an open discussion, the more the merrier.

The Glob is a comic character I created when I was in the 4th grade and Plastic Man was my favorite character. He is one of the few that remain from that time. Trust me: you do NOT want to know about the others.

It really just depends on what that person wants to do... I've recounted my avatar's "origin" several times (my interview is still up on frp) but what really shaped the character was my own experiences. If people need help coming up with something their own, they just need to ask themselves what they like about their favorite heroes. Do they like more designed stuff like the n52 jla, or do they prefer classic underwear on the outside. Do they want to sport a tee shirt and jeans, or do they want a magician's robe.

That said, my biggest advice if you're stuck is to come up with the name first and work your way backwards. If they're posting, they've chosen a username, and most people have a story behind it.

Thanks 'Mato. the other Avatar Request that I received was from someone who hasn't joined the Community yet, so he doesn't have his username set either. But he had asked me to help create an Avatar for him, so I want to make sure I give him good advice.
