Hello everyone, I can't believe this place is still active, but I'm glad it is.
I have just recently managed to get the original FF working in Ubuntu via wine.
Perhaps I'll try my hand at skinning again, but at the moment I'm struggling to remember how to mod the game.

I think it's amazing that you can still play the original  :ff: in another operating system. Is that the latest version of Linux/Ubuntu you are using? That would even be more amazing, since the latest versions of Windows have trouble running FF and i think FFVT3R too in some cases.

Hopefully the mod tools like FFEdit and Character Tool 1 will work for you there too.

Welcome back.

Welcome back, Shazam. Nice to have you back. I'm not sure if this has a part in your issues, but it seems like when a third party resource is used for the game (Steam, GoG, etc.) there is a problem with any FF add-ons that have a set installation path that is based on the standard directory of the game (ie; Program Files-->Irrational Games-->Freedom Force).

I'm installing the original game (bought waaay back in 2002). It's working perfectly via wine, but FFedit, character tool, FFX and EZ hero although installed in the correct directory refuse to work. Oddly though Mr Brdo's hero editor works perfectly.

I don't know how to set it up under Linux, but on the Mac, using Wineskin, you can set the EXE flags to -game ffx3 -log

From the info on WinHQ (https://www.winehq.org/docs/wineusr-guide/index), you could try either adding the arguments when using wine from the command line or a shell script "C:\Program Files\appname\appname.exe -game ffx3 -log" or, apparently, using WineFile.
