i am trying to make my own mod but everytime i click the level edit program it shows me a window with nothing in it and then says "Level edit has stopped working..."
I have a dell vista maybe that has something to do with it

You can try changing compatibility settings, if such a thing exists in Vista, but generally the level editor for  :ff: won't work with newer versions of Windows.  You're better off getting  :ffvstr:.

thank you, hey do you the know where i can find info on how to install maps to ff1 i found the frworld site but it only says how to install them in the  :ffvstr: game

I am not a map installation expert, but I would tend to first do what the notes in the map pack or archive say to do. If there aren't any notes, then do what the instructions for FFvT3R say to do, since about 50% of the installation procedures for the two games are the same, another 45% of the procedures are almost the same, and maybe 5% are significantly different.

Most maps for FF1 included a readme with fairly detailed instructions.
However at its most basic, maps involve 1-3 steps.

Required for all maps.
1. Copy the map folder into the mission directory

Optional depending on whether the map uses custom textures and objects
2. Copy new textures/objects in the proper locations
3. Merge custom dat files included with map into your game dats.
