I'm a newcomer to Freedom Force, and I'm enjoying it so far. I'm trying to use some custom skins and meshes, but I'm running into problems.

Specifically, I'm trying to use Ewzzy's Dr. McNinja.

I've read some tutorials and FAQs on how to add in custom skins and meshes, but I still haven't had any luck with this one. I'm not completely incompetent, as I tried out some other meshes and skins and I was able to get them to work correctly. But I can't seem to get Ewzzy's to work, and I have no idea why. I unzip it and move the files to the custom_characters folder, but the game doesn't recognize the mesh and I end up with the giant white box of failure.

Does anyone know why this isn't working for me? Do I have to rename any of the files or folders? Do I have to distribute some of the files in the .zip to places that aren't immediately apparent?

Howdy Nworobes, and welcome to the forums!  I'm sure that we'll be able to help you, but tell us which game you're playing, FF1 or 2?  That mesh is likely set up to work for FF2, so if you're playing the first one, that could be the problem.  Baring that, can you open the mesh in CTool?

Hi.
Check the non-working mesh looks like all the others you have gotten to work.
The structure should be;
within custom_characters, a folder usually named after the character. In there should be a file called 'character.nif' and a folder called 'skins'. Within that folder should be a folder called 'standard'. Within that folder should be tga or dds files.
if I had to guess from your description I'd guess the mesh has been unzipped into the wrong place, perhaps one folder 'down' in the tree.

One thing to consider is the when some skinners zip their files they zip the entire directory chain, and others only no directory chain, and of course, there are many points in between.  When you unzip a file, you might want to explore it and see how the skinners have their directories set up.
