The Phantom Eyebrow

Possibly of interest to some here (well, me anyway), but The Irish Times are putting together a celebration of the works of Flann O'Brien / Myles na gCopaleen / Brian O'Nolan, who was born 100 years ago and are re-publishing some of his old articles, one per day for the month of October.  These are roughly 60 years old, so I'm not sure how well the humour has aged, particularly when viewed by an international audience, but I've always been a fan and thought I'd throw it out there.  Here, rather.

They can be found at the bottom of the page at the following link:  http://www.irishtimes.com/indepth/100-myles/

There's only two of the articles down there now, but sure the month is only only just begun and that.

Hrmmm... perhaps not all of these articles have aged as well as they might.  The past is a different country, as they say, and the fact that these are also based in a different country to most of you... well, that makes it some level of remove I can't even imagine.

Nonetheless, I've been enjoying them, and I thought I take a moment to bring your attentions to today's article, which has some lovely turns of phrase:  http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2011/1026/1224306505227.html

My apologies, Eyebrow, for completely and unforgivably overlooking this thread...that is, until now.   I've encountered most (if not the majority) of these articles (if not all) during my reading of (perhaps the better part of) The Best of Myles (na gCopaleen) (Dalkey Archive Press, 1999), being a collection of O'Brien's/Ó Nualláin's "Cruiskeen Lawn" column pieces from the Irish Times.  I'll not hear you say the taint of age has touched these timeless monuments of sibhialtacht!  Why, I don't think it too much of an (overblown, as I'm not supposed to say, "breezy") hyperbole to assert that the crooked smile of the world would be a good deal less mischievous (and sport a bit less drool) without "Cruiskeen Lawn!"

[Prem mode]I am issuing an edict: All must read these writings!  Click.  Browse.  Read.  Now.[/Prem mode]

Many thanks for the links, Eyebrow!
