FR Behaving Badly

Howdy guys, I'm having some trouble with FR these days.  I constantly get a timed-out message or something of the like.  Often I'll get a message that says the site is taking too long to respond, only to have it load a moment later.  Alternately, it will tell me that the browser can't load the site, but if I keep trying, eventually it will pop up.  Usually, once it's loaded it will work fine for a while. 

Anyone have any ideas what's causing this?  I'm using both Chrome and Firefox and getting similar results.  Is there something I can change in my settings to fix this?

In fact, it just did it as I tried to post this topic.  This is making it really hard to use the site!

Yeah, I'm getting the same thing. Thought that it was just me, haha

No idea how to fix it, to be honest.  Seems like something that has to be handled Server side.

I thought it was me too. I have nearly quit using Internet Explorer, but I forget out of habit and this morning it hung as soon as I hit the shortcut in my Favorites file. I had to use Task Manager to kill it and open Firefox.

Guys, I have looked into this. I haven't seen any odd problems in the site logs I double-checked that our forum software is up to date. In addition, I checked all three of your IPs against our error logs and I am not seeing a problem. I have visited FR myself from several locations and not had any trouble recently.

It's possible that your ISPs are routing FR in an odd way or parhaps there is a caching issue. Also, it's possible there is some problem with corrupt cookies. If you are still having issues it may help to clear your freedomreborn.net cookies and clear your browsers cache. (Usually, the browser's privacy settings allow you to clear the cookies for an individual site. You will have to log in again, but it may help.)

Yeah, I tried clearing my cache. After a day or so, it seemed to have worked rather nicely.

As DG said, it seems to have fixed itself.  I haven't had any issues today.

I also have seen some timeout-like issues, usually when attempting to post.  When I hit the post button, I'll get a blank page, with simple text saying something to the effect that the page isn't available.  Hit the back button, and my post text is still in the window (thankfully).  Hitting Post again usually lets it go through.  I think I first noticed it during my initial SHIELD agents post (in Hero Files) on Sunday, and definitely until my last post that night in BG's topic in the same forum, and possibly again on my post last night in BG's Marvel request thread.

It's obviously all your fault, since it's suspiciously started happening after you got back in-country.  You're probably infested with Chinese nanites.  A long walk through a flamethrower should do the trick.


On the serious side, I wasn't able to get back to the site at all later on last night, from about 10 - 11 pm, Pacific time.  I'm not ruling out that it was an issue with my provider (Comcast), but I did try it from another machine, same result.  Timed out.

PG, I checked the logs for that period last night from both of the recent IPs we have for you and there is no activity (no normal activity or errors) associated with the IPs during that time. I even checked the error logs to see if maybe you were getting swept up in one of our DOS attack filters, but it's just the usual collection of miscreants from Ukrainian IPs.

One thing that might be useful to know is whether this happens for the FR domain generally (in other words, does it happen if you go to the welcome page at http://freedomreborn.net/), to the FR forum home page (http://freedomreborn.net/forums/index.php), or to specific forum pages? Or to all? Part of the reason things time out is that some parts of a page (some of the FR graphics or php-generated HTML or someone's avatar) may be taking too long. If you try going to those pages directly, does the issue recur? If this is an issue on the FR end, knowing which pages are causing trouble may help isolate the problem.

Usually when I refresh I'm sitting on the main menu, but last night I even tried backing out to the welcome page, as well as attempting to go to the welcome page on another computer (that has never been to FR before).  Same results.  When I posted this morning it was from work, and now that I'm back home, the welcome page was already up (since that was the last that I attempted).  I'm happy to chalk it up to some kind of transient issue, but when the site is unavailable for that long, I start to get flashbacks & go into worry mode.
