Does Freedom Force or FFVTR still work on Windows 10? Using the GOG version.

Can you still play  :ff: or  :ffvstr: gog versions on Windows 10? I am having problems getting them to run properly. :ff:

Both games run fine for me with GoG on Windows 10. Steam is another story.

Sayg

I'm trying to play it on my laptop. I know i tried installing it before. The game gets stuck on the title screen menu. When i try to click on any of the button choices, nothing happens.

So i tried installing the new GOG galaxy app, hoping i can get it to work there. But the same thing happens. Title screen shows, but none of the buttons work when you click on them.

Not sure if its because i am using the windows 10, 64 bit? Instead of the 32 bit? I know some games can only work for the 32 bit version only.

I don't have the GOG version, but I've heard that they both work well for it.  I'd try running the game in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP 3 or Windows 8.

I tried running the game in compatibility mode for windows XP SP3 or Windows 8 and even Windows 7. Still doesn't work properly for me.  :ffvstr: gets stuck in the main menu with all the music and stuff, but nothing happens when you try clicking any of the buttons displayed like New Campaign, Options, or even Quit Game.

Hrm, Sayg, that's odd!  Are you running it as an administrator?  I don't know if that would do anything, but it's another option to try.  After that, I'd try the other XP options.  I would definitely run it WITHOUT Galaxy.  I don't know that Galaxy would interfere, but it's one less variable.

Yeah.  Tried running it as administrator as well, and used the other XP options as well when windows tried to troubleshoot things for me. Even running  :ffvstr: direct from its folder still gives the same results though.  Main menu. Scrolling background and music playing. But totally unresponsive buttons/options when i click on them. It does generate the correct sound effect as i hit those buttons. It's just that nothing happens. Thanks for trying to help Benton.

Hmm, that is really strange!  I'm sorry Sayg, but I can't figure out what else to try.  I guess you could try running it through Galaxy, and try running Galaxy itself in compatibility mode?  I did that with Steam at one stage, and it helped me with some  :ffvstr: issues.

This may sound like a dumb question, but have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling yet? This sounds to me less of a compatibility thing and more of a broken install/patch issue thing.

I'd also contact gog's support team.  :ff: and  :ffvstr: both work on 64bit Win10, I have the steam copies on my pc.

Thanks for the suggestion Tomato. But after uninstalling and reinstalling the game, i still get the same results. So i have taken your advice, and contacted gog's support team on the matter. Will wait for their reply and see if they can fix the issue.

I am tempted to get steam copies now.

Does  :ffvstr: work? Doing some google fu to try to look into solutions, seeing a lot of reports of  :ff: having more issues than  :ffvstr: , and if it's a  :ff: issue specifically that can help narrow the scope of potential issues. I'm going to boot up my steam copy of  :ff: (which I haven't tested since changing to Win 10, been using  :ffvstr: since long before.) see if I can replicate/fix the issues you're having

Tomato

As an addendum, I wasn't able to get the error you're having with  :ff:, but the steam version has a different issue when actually being played that GoG apparently patched, so I wouldn't rush off and buy the steam version just yet.

If there's any way to change resolution, lowering it might help as well for some reason. I've also seen someone suggest something called dgVoodoo 2 on this forum page.

Sayg

Yeah. I've heard about that bug for  :ff: in the steam versions as well. So i am kinda wary/hesitant to buy the steam versions too.

There is still no word or response from GOG support  as regards to my problems with their games. Beginning to doubt if they will help or reply to me at all. I've tested GOG's version of  :ff: in my laptop as well. The best i could get was until the CRAVE logo appears, after that the game crashes. Used both via Galaxy app and without it. Both times having the same results of crashing after the CRAVE logo.

Thanks for recommending the dgVoodoo 2, but i tried downloading it and it was taking a while, so i had seconds thoughts about continuing the download. There were warnings and disclaimers i had to agree in case there could be viruses and such.

I guess i will just wait and see if i do get contacted by GOG support. But i'm thinking they might not, when i read some of the comments on the forum page you linked. There were complaints of the game not working for them in GOG, and it seemed they didn't get it to work for them either.

Have you tested  :ffvstr: ? It's not ideal, and you wouldn't be able to use  :ff: mods, but IIRC there's a mod that at least lets you play the original game's story. I had been kinda considering playing FF1 recently, but I was having the steam issue. Might get the GOG version on payday, see if I can figure anything out.

I still play  :ff: even on Windows 10 and works fine, but its from an old cd that i have moved on various usb storages through the  :ff: ages.

spydermann93

Are you in Windowed mode or something?

Perhaps if you're in borderless windowed mode, perhaps the difference in resolution between the game and your desktop is throwing off the mouse cursor.

Have you also tried running without any compatibility modes active? Sometimes those break more than they fix, especially if you're running the app itself (i.e. GoG, Steam, etc) in compatibility mode.

The whole unresponsive buttons on the main menu thing was with  :ffvstr:.  GOG support had tried giving me lots of possible ideas on how to get the game to work. I told them, i was still encountering the same issues when i try clicking on the buttons it won't respond but would just make a sound. They were running out of ideas on what i could still do to probably fix the issue. But lo and behold, i tried  :ffvstr: one more time today.  It was a DOH  moment for me. I was able to finally get the main menu buttons to respond! The game was actually working this whole time and it was just me that think of that possible scenario on why it wasn't "working" for me. ( I would be surprised if one of you guys can guess, how i got things to work out and what i did wrong. Hehehe.)

On the other hand,  :ff: still keeps crashing on me after the CRAVE entertainment logo.  Not sure how you other guys got that working. I will try to see if GOG support can be of help with  :ff:.

P.S. Will try to check out the  :ff: mod for  :ffvstr: , but from what i recall, i thought the mod was kinda incomplete or unfinished? I will try to test it out. Does the  :ff: mod require me to install ffx3 first?  Still running vanilla  :ffvstr: at the moment.

I wasn't in Windowed mode or anything. And i tried running the compatibility mode in Windows 8 and it still works. But it wasn't the real issue i was having with the game.

Hmmm, i still have the cd copy of  :ff: as well. Maybe i could try copying it in a usb and "mounting" it through a program like "alcohol"? Virtual cd installation.

Well I'm all curiosity.  What was the issue?

Ha, very glad you got it working!  I hope that you can do the same for  :ff:.  Mine worked just by running the troubelshooter and settling on Windows 8 compatibility mode, for some reason.

I have experienced no issues with  :ff: till windows 7, from then i have found 2 bugs, one is in the danger room, you cannot exit from it without a game crash, i 'solved' this, exit directly from a game session started menu.
The other one is that sometimes the game start without the movement pointer arrow, just a melee pointer, i dont know why, you just have to restart the game.

The issue was my mouse. I usually have it as a left handed setting. I didn't realize the game has its own settings, so the mouse settings was by default a right handed one for the game.

Anyway, installed the Freedom Force mod for  :ffvstr:, and so far so good. It plays/feels like the original.
