So, today I was trying to avoid starting work on my thesis, and trying to get a little inspiration on level design for the DCUG at the same time.  I fired up FF2 and started playing through the original campaign (with FFX3, of course).  It was just an absolute blast!  As I was playing, I was reminded of how much I loved these characters, and how clever and fun this and the original both were.  With that realization came sadness though, as it hit me (not for the first time, I know) that we'll almost certainly never see another Freedom Force game.  It is a real shame, and I suppose all the more reason to treasure the games that we do have, both for the limitless potential for customization and because they are simply excellent games in their own right.  Anyway, I just wanted to share that with y'all.  I figure that y'all would understand.

I hear you guys. I played through the original FF campaign toward the end of last year and had a blast, realizing how endearing the characters are. Earlier this month, I decided to go back and play through DrMike's Strangers campaign again, since it had been a couple years. That was so much fun that this last weekend I played Tales of the Navigator. I probably play through the FFvT3R FFX campaign a few times per year, mostly because I have an original character concept I've been playing in the RR and I want to see how s/he works on a team.

I am a little more hopeful that there will be another FF-like PC game in the future (the amount of customization doesn't really lend itself to consoles), though I agree there doesn't seem to be any sign that Irrational (or whoever they are now) wants to take on the project. That probably means whatever the game, it will be based on a new engine and not have the FF characters. Of course, if the game is significantly mod-able (which is basically how I define an FF-like superhero game, able to take custom art assets and scripting), we can bring them back...  ^_^

The good news, for me at least, is that there are still many mods I've never played, for both versions of the game. And, a nice stream of goodies in terms of new mods, meshes, skins, maps, voices, FFX attributes and swaps, etc. keep the game fresh to me.

Yeah, I don't want to sound too doom and gloom or anything, and there are TONS of projects out there that I haven't played or haven't finished.  I have a running list of things that I want to play "some day."  There are also still projects out there in the ether that are being talked about or worked on that keep me interested.  Heck, I was just talking with someone the other day about doing something with the original FF cast.  I think that this community can continue to keep these characters alive for years to come...but that doesn't mean that I wouldn't love to see Irrational return to them. :)  I suppose that's one of the reasons I love Liberty Bay so much.  It FEELS similar in a way few other things do.  Ohh, and I replay Strangers and Navigator every year or so too!

Yeah, unfortunately Irrational got burnt a bit with FFvTTR being a self-published venture. It could have been a big hit, but campy WW II superheroics proved to be too big a niche for the general public, especially compared to the slightly sci-fi straight-played superheroics of City of Heroes. Even among genre fans, I suspect few of us have much warmth for the WW II era compared to the classic Kirby era of the first title.

If they'd gone a slightly different route and made the sequel a more modern take on the genre, even disco 70's or grim 80's, things could have turned out different.

That said - superhero games are going strong right now. CoH shows no sign of slowing down, and Champions Online is out in September. A good moddable single player game like Freedom Force would be awesome, but I suspect that the PC game market is moving very much towards MMOs these days, for better or worse. That said, superheroes are stronger than ever at the moment with Marvel's movies, so we may well yet see something customisable along the lines of FF again.

If we do, I'll be there.

While I concur with the above sentiments, I say give it time. Years from now,  some game developer will have fond memories of the FF series and it will be long enough for the games to have become one of the gaming retro things... games that were popular enough to be known, but not popular enough to remain in the public consciousness.... and then someone will pitch sthe idea of a remake or sequel, and while the original creators will not be involved they will grant license permission to do something... much the same way we got, Fallout 3, or any of the updated remakes/sequels to old platform games.

Just like the movies, games are cyclical , and lets face it fairly unoriginal for the most part....
Mark my words, it will see some kind of light again at some point.

This is one of the best games I've EVER played. Very few games out there allow you to customize like this one does. Where else can you play so many characters from DC, Marvel and Image all in the same game? You can practically re-create any comic storyline out there with all the custom stuff the community has provided. This is one game that I will be returning to again and again.
