EDIT:  I applied a shadow to better separate the blue and the white of his costume.  I also made the white part of his costume more white because it looked gray.

Something I forgot to mention before was that this for the male_muscular mesh by Beyonder, but works fine with any mesh without a cape, hood, belt or anything.  However, the reflection effect for the ice cracks on his skin or the glow for his eyes may not be applied on some meshes.

Gremlin

Cool concept and nice colors. However, I definitely think he'd benefit from some depth. Try some shading around the edges where blue meets gray, or apply some filter to make it look like a different material.

stonecold

Hey thanks for the tips.  I don't know many things about skinning to make him look better so any input is greatly appreciated.

cascarudo

it look cool i like the form of the cracks

That's pretty good for a first skin. Best input I can give is to keep at it. You'll continually improve with each skin you make. Looking forward to seeing more. :)

AfghanAnt

That is a pretty good skin. A lot better than my first one.

Thanks for the compliments guys.  In the meantime, I have started work on a second skin, whom I call Gravity Man.  I know the name is kind of cliche, but I couldn't think of anything else since he is a manipulator of gravity and particles.  Anyway, I am stuck because I don't know how to do hair.  But here is what he looks like so far...

Nice couple of 1st skins!

Here is a great tutorial for skinning hair:

Cool job!

I would suggest making those blue jagged lines on your first character's torso also reach down over his legs, but that's just a personal preference. :)

stonecold

I would make them reach to his legs but he is wearing pants, and the pants would cover them up.

I have completed my second skin - Gravity Man.  However, I have some questions.  Is there any way that I can get rid of those gray-looking sections on the red parts of his costume?  They really bug me because it is supposed to be a brilliant red but it's dull.

Outcast

I'm not sure. But it could be that your reflect tga file is not completely black? If it is, try painting it all black.

stonecold

This character doesn't have a reflection file becuase the mesh doesn't use them.  Thanks anyway, though. ^_^

I'm assuming you're using Gryphon's tutorial, yes? In order to make the reds deeper, you have to either set the color layer to multiply (which sometimes works) or select the area you're coloring and adjust the "brightness and contrast." Right now the luminance (or brightness) of the base under your red is too bright, which gives it a desaturated look.

Also... just wanted to make an observation, if you'll permit me, that'll really benefit you for future skins. You see how jagged your lines look? Before you get started on a skin, resize the image to 1024x1024px THEN do your lines and details. Then, when you're ready to release, you can shrink down to 512x512px.

I should try that one day.

Thanks for the tip Tomato.  And yes, you were right, the first tutorial I looked at was Gryphon's.

Although, I have tried doin the 1024 x 1024 thing before.  The only problem is when I go to look at how my character is turning out using the Character Tool, the skin is all jumbled up on the mesh and I can't see where anything is.

I made a pretty simple tutorial a while back. Not sure how much it'll help but at the very least it's got some techniques for increasing work flow.

Yeah... when you resize a skin, you need to reopen ctool or it won't show the skin properly. For some reason it keeps the size data from before
