for some reason when i start it everything is fine. but after a while all i can type in is caps and all links on firefox and ie open in new windows its like the shift keys are constantly stuck but they are not.  i use the arrow keys of click and it highlights and all keys use the second functions eg . becomes >

Sounds like you have Sticky Keys activated.  Check under your control panel under "Accessibility Options" and see if "Use Sticky Keys" is on.

Yeah, I hate that feature. A lot of the time it'll activate itself just because you tapped shift repeatedly or held it too long.
