When I try to patch the original FF1, Datfix hangs and keeps re-loading, and re-loading, and re-loading, and...

And I've been looking foward to FF1 maybe working again.

Anyone else had this happen, and is there a way around it?

Later...

Okay, new (or maybe the same problem): I can't convert meshes. I was trying to convert all Kenn's WONDERFUL meshes, and all I got was a series of failures. So, some meshes can't be converted, it happens. Just as a check, I got an unconverted version of a mesh that I had already converted, and I ran it through the converter. Same result. It seems as though the program cretes a back-up file, then before it's finished, the program stops responding and the file dissapears. Once I've gotten an errormessage that says something like or "Something has caused NifFix to stop working. Please wait while we check to see if there is a solution". Then "Hit Cancel to close the program", which I guess means "No".

Whatever happened to the "ERROR 00666-YOUR COMPUTER HAS BEEN POSESSED BY A DEMON AND WILL NOW SHUT DOWN" or "ERROR 5004658651; KNAKCLFLURG POSIT SYSTEM HAS MADE AN ILLEGAL CQLL TO THE GIZMONICS ARRAY AND ALL DATA IS LOST. HIT ANY BUTTON TO CONTINUE" kinds of messages?

I activated THE Adminstrator user, and tried it that way. All the folders seem to be Read Only, and neither me nor The Administrator seems to be able to turn that off. The administrator can't seem to patch FF1 or convert meshes either.

Whatever is going on may be the same problem that won't let me install my Photoshop filters.

Thoughts, suggestions anything? :banghead: :banghead:

Maybe it's impolite to "bump" this soon, but I'm running out of ideas.

There us a reason that I remain a luddite when it comes to upgrading my OS. So many of the things I use on my home machine are older pieces of software that have quirky issues, that I just cant pull the plug on updating.... So really i cant offer to much help there.

If you mainly are looking at using ctool and other utilities for skinning and what not, you might try using a VM of windows XP (either VirtualPC or VMWare). They should be able to handle that stuff just fine. Playing the game itself, you are probably gonna not be able to do too well under virtualization.

Thank you Goggles, for the idea. I am pursuing that course of action now.

However...

Is anyone else having problems with FF1 and Windows 7?

daglob

Well, Virtual PC lets me convert FF1 meshes to FFv3R, and it let me patch FF1, but I still can't get FF1 to work (I can't copy the patched FF1 files from VPC to my regular hard drive, either, which annoys me).

Again: is anyone running FF1 under Windows 7, and if so, how did you do it?

UAF

I am.
I just installed it, then the 1.3 patch...

Okay, it's finally working...

...but...

I can't change skins in the hero creation section. It shows the default skin no matter how many skins I have in the folder (I've tried Male Basic, which has the most). The forward and back arrows are active (not faded out), but don't do anything when I click on them. I can probably fix it in EXHero, but I wonder if I'm just missing a simple setting that should be one way and I have it the other.

Has anyone else had this problem?

GogglesPizanno

The only time I ever saw a problem like this was in FFvTR and the skins varied between TGA and DDS within a single mesh. When they got mixed it caused the mesh to default to "standard" every time. I haven't heard of that issue in FF (especially since it only supported TGA skins). Is there anything weird about the directory structure that might cause the game to get confused, like extra directory depths or something?

daglob

It's on the D drive instead of the C drive, but that didn't affect it before. Of course, Windows XP and Windows 7 aren't the same.
