Not really, spammers/scammers love to get a hold of old email addresses and use them to spam people in their address book.  It's exploiting the trust we have for people we know.  I've been experiencing the same thing with a friend who just got back from a tour in Iraq.  His old email address has been spamming me like crazy.

I just wired you $50K herodad1. That should help you get out of England. :P

bearded

"I'm in love with your brother-in-law."
"You're in love with your own brother? The one in the army?"
"No. Your sister's husband."
"Michael? Michael."
"No. That's your sister's brother."
"No, I'm my sister's brother. You're in love with me? Me."
"I'm in love with Tobias."
"My brother-in-law?"
"I know it can never be, so I'm leaving. I'm enlisting in the army."
"To be with your brother?"
"No. "

And now for something completely different...

The Phantom Eyebrow

Well it just goes to show the sophisticated ruses that these scammers can come up with, they can really pull at the heart-strings.  I mean, the thought of having friends, family or loved ones stranded on some island, thousands of miles from home... well, it doesn't bear thinking about!

If you really had someone out of touch it would be downright cruel.

Comes under the heading of "Shootin's too good fer 'um".

Until you realize that most of these people are from poor impoverished countries and have no other way of making money.  That doesn't justify what they're doing, of course, but it does make you feel a bit sorry for them.

I agree that it isn't justified, but no other way of making money besides stealing everything from elderly people? Surely they could kidnap children and sell their meat to their own parents? I really don't feel sorry for them at all no matter how poor they are.

I think so me of the stuff people do on this site is really funny and sometimes just brilliant (one guy actually got some idiot scammer to send him $50)

The culture teaches that anyone stupid enough to fall for there scams deserves what they get.  That's wrong, of course, but it's actually part of the culture in Nigeria in particular. They even have a word for white people that fall for internet scams and have popular songs about ripping people off.

Actually, there's a few friends, family and business colleagues who I would have no problem thinking about stranded on some island thousands of miles away, especially around the holiday season.

I haven't sent out any emails asking for money either, but if anyone wants to send me some anyway, I won't stop you. :P

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who thinks this way.   :P
For anyone, and everyone, who has ever done anything to improve the FF/FFvs3R gaming experience, I want to say thank you. Life is so short, and you have all brought me so much joy. I hope that one day, I am somehow able to return the kindness and generosity that all of you have shown.

The Phantom Eyebrow

Heh.  Well that was sort of my point too - of all the places to be stranded, its not like England is the most remote and inaccessible location you could be.
