Hi there. As the title says, I'm looking for a program, though not any one in particular. You see, for the last several months, I have been brainstorming this story in my head, and one day, I'd like to get it out. But unlike my...previous endeavors, I desire to organize and better plan it first. My first step would be creating character bios, so as to further flesh out my cast and their long-term development plans, which is especially essential since there ended up being a sizable list of total characters. Now, what I'm looking for is a program that can not only type words, but also have pictures in the same file. I want to take pictures off the web to serve as visual roll models for certain characters. And as a non-necessary extra, it would also be nice to be able put music tracks that fit the characters into the files.

Is there a program out there capable of at least the pictures, or am I stuck with just text?

Do you not have Microsoft Word or Works?
If not, I guess open office, the free version would work best: http://www.openoffice.org/.
You could do the music files if you made your documents html pages. I'm not really sure if you can add music to word in any way but it wouldn't surprise me.
I apologize in advance for everything I say on here. I regret it immediately after clicking post.

Yeah, same thing. In the 2007 edition, you just click the insert tab then the picture button.
I think in 2003 it's click insert > picture > from file.

Also, on the insert tab, you can click object, then  "from file" and select a file (like an mp3) and it will play it in your default player when you click on the button it creates in the document. (in 2007, I don't know if you can have objects in 2003 edition)

Ywriter has most of the features you're looking for and it's free and built for long term projects: http://www.spacejock.com/yWriter5.html

Celtx is more for practicing screenplays and other forms of scripts, but it also has a plain word processor that allows you to add pictures, links, and files.

I'd go with ywriter, however.

Dissertation writing? And no-one recommended Latex? For shame!

Latex

Best thing since sliced bread, to be honest. A large learning curve, but you will love it when it comes to referencing and inserting diagrams and dynamic content ^^

Thanks, but I've already been using Y Writer. It's great at organizing my ideas. Nice of you to suggest though.  :)

This is sort of an aside at this point, but, as someone who finished a dissertation and some published papers using Word, LaTex is really excellent. In addition to really "getting it right" with regard to figures, equations, tables, etc., many universities and (especially) many journals have standardized around LaTex and they have standard style sheets available so that one can just apply the given style sheet and all of the little quirky formatting requirements are taken care of.
