Do we, as a community, have any particular feelings about making mods available via torrents?  Someone suggested this to me, and it seemed like a reasonable idea, but I thought I'd check with the community.

I don't see why not. It's just another means of distribution.

i think its good. only problem would be seeds and peers, wouldn't it?

*notes it's been awhile since I've posted*

We've had several torrent topics pop up, but no definitive answers ever arose. I think the last Torrent topic is in the archives. I know for sure that someone is hosting old FF1 mods via a torrent, but the big problem is having people share them. That, and I think most would rather grab things directly from a safe site rather than risk a torrent, but that's just my inclination.

I for one am not such a fan of this idea. :(
I can't help it that I look so good baby! I'm just a love machine!

Thanks guys, that was more or less my impression.  Yeah Prev., I'm always hesitant about torrents myself, but I thought I might make something available in more than one way, then people can choose which method they want.

I've generally had lots of troubling downloading and installing torrents in the past, mostly due to my internet network's filtering system that prohibits access to most download sites.  I remember downloading a file once but it was a huge pain trying to find the proper software to open it up and Vista ending up crashing at the end of the day.  So I would prefer having the option of a more traditional means of downloading files.  Still, it might be a decent option if that's the method other people prefer.  I'm not really aware of the advantages of the method, other than the fact that it probably is the best way to compress large files.

I should clarify that if I do end up releasing via a torrent, I'll also release via Mediafire direct download just like I have been.

The wikipedia article I found was kind of confusing so I'll take a stab at it. A torrent is a file that puts you in line to download a file that is shared amongst multiple users. Lets say you want to download the big DC mod that Benton did... once you get in line you will be getting small pieces of it from my computer, from his and from anyone else who is sharing it. Great distribution model SO LONG as we all keep sharing it, otherwise you are better off getting it from another source.

I'm all for it but like I said above, we all need to make a commitment to keep the files on our computer and not nuke them for space asap.

Yeah its a good distributed distribution model provided there are enough people seeding the file with bandwidth to spare. My concern is that as small as the community is, and the even smaller number of people who would keep seeding the file, that it really would not be efficient. Someplace like mediafire would be a way faster download i think.

Now, if the mod was as popular as the latest episode of True Blood or the latest Ubuntu release, then perhaps it would make sense...

Thanks.

Personally, I wiould probably prefer a mediafire type file over a Torrent file then.
