Hamrick, thanks for the suggestions, especially the more detailed thoughts on Sandman!  I'll try to check some of those out. 

I went with the strongest material.  I may still have my final paper from the Independent Study class I took.  If I do, I will happy to send it to you provided that I remain credited for the paper.    My professor who was supervising the class was a mentor of mine named William Doxey, who wrote a few sci-fi novels in the early 80s that I don't think were all that well known.  He commented at the end of the semester that we had practically had the basics of a class and he actually wanted to see me do something further with the concept.  If you want the notes I had and the paper, let me know.
