This is fairly awesome guys. I'm planning my classes for this semester (Western Literature, ESL Comp, and Reading), and I talked the head of the ESL department into making a few additions to our library. She just ordered the following:

Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
Treasure Island by Robert Lewis Stevenson
Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper
Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs
John Carter of Mars series, also by Burroughs
Daybreak 2250, a.k.a., Star Man's Son by Andre Norton

Graphic Novels=
Kingdom Come by Kurt Busiek et al
Marvels by Kurt Busiek et al
Astro City: Confessions by Kurt Busiek et al
Astro City: Life in the Big City by Kurt Busiek et al
Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller
Squadron Supreme by Mark Gruenwald et al
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind by Hayao Miyazaki

So, I'm pretty excited.

BG you sweet talker...great list!  Teaching ESL through the medium of Sci-fi/Fantasy..I wish my library would agree to do that my EFL classes.  Instead, my courses have been dumbed down.

Thanks Thalaw!  My boss/partner in crime has said she's looking forward to reading all of these, as her reading experience has never really brought her in contact with the likes of these texts.  She's from South Africa, and she's missed out on the excellent American experience of the four color comic hero.

I'm sorry to hear that about your classes man!  Is there no way to inject some of this type of awesome into the experience?

I just got offered to teach a course called "English e-book reading" today,  i'm hoping i can work comics into it somehow.

I'm a bit amazed that the school library didn't already have such classics as Treasure Island, Last of the Mohicans, Tarzan of the Apes, or the John Carter of Mars series.  Those are usually in most libraries nowadays.

Ahh, but this was just the small ESL library, not the school's library.

Cool DM, that seems like a pretty good excuse to bring in a comic story or two!  Go for it!
