I've been unemployed for over a year now, welcome to the club.

If you really need to get on welfare and get some General Relief don't feel bad about it.  I had to do it when I was unemployed after college and with no unemployment checks left.  At least I didn't feel like I was completely useless at home.  I could buy groceries for the family and I didn't have to ask for spending money.

I felt like a loser at the time, but looking back on it all these years later it wasn't so bad and life could certainly have been worse.  Besides, I eventually got a new career out of it and traveled around the world...most of it...with just a few stops here and there.

Wow, two years? You've got me beat. How do you pay your bills? I just cashed out my IRA so I can pay mine. Its one of those things you are not supposed to do, but when the bills are piling up and there is no money coming in...

I may not be unemployed, but I'm two steps away from homeless. My dad's kicking me out, and I'm scrambling to get an apartment by the end of the month.

I survive by scrounging up stuff and salvaging scrap metal for sell.  Actually done okay well doing that, but it helps if your in a large city though, which I'm not.

Man, sorry to hear that TUE!  Good luck on the hunt, man.  It's been a while since I was there, but I remember.

Captmorgan, sheesh man, that's rough!  Good luck to you too!

'Mato, I hope you find something nice, man.

DJ, that just ticks me off, those darn touchy-feely CIA types, putting good torturers out of work....

I know!  It's like "What the hell am I supposed to do?"  I guess I could hire myself out to the Russian Mafia but they ususally import top-notch Russian torturers for their work.....

And I suppose that undercutting the prices of expert torturers is probably not a winning proposition....

Hard to undercut the Russians becuase they usually work for free becuase for their buddies.  And no, undercutting the Russians isn't a smart idea, unless you want to die along with your family, your pets, your, friends, and anyone who just ahppened to pass you on the street two weeks ago.

Sounds like it's time for you to branch into a lateral, related field:  Network TV Program Director.

Oh, wait, no, sorry.......you're over-qualified.  You have more than one neuron firing inside that drafty skull of yours.

Any updates? The job market is pretty good right now and applications for Unemployment are at a 5 year low... so it is not a bad time to be unemployed.

Yeah, I sound like an HR person but my assignment was ending on the 28th of Dec. and I did a LOT of freaking out before they unexpectedly extended me on the 27th.

Best of luck in the apartment search 'Mato. I hope there are no hard feelings between you and your dad, I am more that familiar with getting kicked out and the strain it puts on a relationship, I hope all turns out well.

It's a bit more complicated then that... I've needed to get out of here for awhile, he's just putting a "deadline" on it to to make me actually do it.

I've actually got an apartment more or less signed for (gotta get paperwork for electricity and such), though it's not something I can afford long term on my own (I can pay it, but only if I spend nothing on practically anything else ever.) but I'm talking to a guy who could potentially be a roommate. I've applied for a two bedroom anyway (it was $4 more expensive to get a two then a one. I'm serious.) and half the rent is a really good deal for this area, so even if he falls through I kinda doubt I'll have issues finding another roommate.

In a bizarre coincidence, the week I actually can start moving into the apartment happens to be the same week I randomly took off work (it was the most convenient week in terms of getting my boss to sign off on it, because it's a week I don't have a weekend shift).

Good luck everyone.
I gotta say,  I think I have the exact same story as Thalaw2!
After uni, and moving to another city there was very little I could find.
I found out about a government program to help me find a job, but I had to be on welfare to do it.
Let me tell you, $250 dollars a month sure is a motivator to find work. I was applying for everything left right and center...at least 40 applications a day. Well, seven years later and I'm still in the same field that saved me from welfare and I've been able to do a lot of traveling because of it.

I am a complete atheist... but I have a dozen stupid and weird personal superstitions. One is that I believe in "job karma" meaning you need to apply to every job and go to every interview... and that somehow builds up karma for you to land that great job. Sure, it is put forth by the same part of my brain that thinks something is under my bed or that my internet connection actively chose the worst moments to start sucking... but there is some truth to apply, apply, apply and you will find.

That might work for normal people and normal jobs but do you really want to go to some "interview" with some Italian thug named Gino who wants to see if you're "fit" to be a "made man"?  Believe me, those interviews aren't the type that bring about job karma.....

Nope, they're the kind that bring about instant karma...
