Recording Freedom Force?

I'm trying to get some footage for a Freedom Force LP, but I'm not sure how to go about recording it. FRAPS causes it to crash whenever it goes through a loading screen (I recall that it worked with older versions of FRAPS for some reason when I recorded about two years ago), OBS mostly works but gives me a file with no audio, and while I've had some success with dxtory, it seems a big buggy, lagging the heck out of my game. Any insight as to how I can record the game successfully?

Maybe you could try putting FF in a virtual machine, and then record the virtual machine's screen and audio?

Worth a shot. What exactly would I need to set up one of those virtual machine things?

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Sadly, thinking about it a bit more, it's going to be problematic, sorry. Basically, under Windows, the free solutions are probably not good enough for your needs and the pro solutions are going to be priced accordingly.

On Windows, the main virtualization solution I know of are:
– Windows XP Mode included in Windows 7 Pro (requires Pro version, and not 3D acceleration)
– Virtual Box (free open source, but no 3D acceleration)
– VMWare Workstation ($250 – however a 30-day demo is available; this is probably your best bet)

Mind you, I haven't tried any of those (except for the Mac version of Virtual Box), as I'm on a Mac, where a different and cheaper (being consummer-oriented) products (VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop) are available.

Took a look at VMWare Workstation, and even if I could afford it seems like a bit of a pain. I'm...not that great at video editing, and it'd be a bit too much workflow for me.

As it turns out, however, using the oldest version of FRAPS I could find worked brilliantly. What a world, eh?

Great news and indeed much more straightforward. Have fun on the LP!
