Tom and Jerry premiered on the big screen in 1940 and went on to over 100 more theater cartoons, including 7 academy award winners. They were the 1st creations of Hanna Barbera, who went on the create countless television cartoons when theater cartoons became obsolete.

Since their start, Tom and Jerry have starred in several new television series, comic books, toys, video games and several of their own movies, with new productions still being made. They are one of the few cartoons with true international acclaim due to the cartoons use of music and sound effects in place of dialogue.
