This is a question about  :ffvstr:. As an older game it runs only in a 4:3 mode and I have a 16:9 monitor. In my previous graphic card (Radeon HD 5870) I could run the game fine in 1400x1050 resolution to maintain a proper 4:3 aspect ratio. When I bought a new graphic card (GeForce GTX 780 Ti) the highest resolution shown available in game that is 4:3 compatible is 1024x768, which is kinda low. I used the nVidia control panel to add a custom resolution 1400x1050x32 and it becomes available in game, but the nVidia control panel gives a warning that this resolution is not supported by my monitor and can damage it . So is it safe play the game on that setting? Since the previous graphic card supported this resolution without any warnings with the same monitor I assume it is, but I wanted to ask someone more knowledgable to be sure.

Just so that you know, the game supports 16:9 mode, as far as I know, and 16x10 as well. My last monitor and my laptop are both 1920x1280 (WUXGA) and both FF and FFvT3R ran at that resolution. I think the games allow whatever resolution that your drivers and graphics card report are available (perhaps up to some limit I haven't run up against).

The resolutions safely supported by your monitor are determined by the monitor itself. They should be easy to find by searching for your monitor's model number. For instance if I google dell 2408wfp supported resolutions, Dell's product page lists a bunch of the supported modes of my monitor. Your monitor probably has a similar spec sheet for its supported modes. For the most part, I run all games in the native mode and I wouldn't be tempted to try and run in a mode not supported by the monitor, card, and drivers.

Thanks for the suggestion Stumpy. I checked in the monitor's manual and it seems there is no 1400x1050 listed in standard resolutions. The closest would be 1280x1024 or 1440 x 900. The max. and suggested resolution for this monitor is 1920x1080. It is strange though b/c before installing a new graphic card in the video tab of the game setting there was a selectable 1400x1050 and I was playing like that for a long time. I know that the game resolution can be set to one compatible with a 16:9 screen, but the image will be stretched horizontally, so I was selecting a 4:3 compatible resolution to get an image with proper proportions of height/width. In other words the game was displayed on a 16:9 monitor with black bars on the sides. And the highest 4:3 available resolution now is only 1024x786, unless I would use nVidia control panel and add a higher 4:3 resolution as a non-standard one.
