I signed up for ChatGPT a few days ago. I have been having a little fun exploring what it knows (a lot) and doesn't know (also a lot). But, it presents whatever it says in sort of a convincing narrative voice. It doesn't seem to actually understand things. But, it's quite good at recognizing the language templates (writing styles, etc.) in which information is presented, categorizing roughly what is being talked about, and combining/reproducing what it has read - and often what you have just told it - when asked about it. Its responses are in a human-written style. That doesn't mean that it gets the information right; you will see that it confuses some characters and storylines. But, its writing is convincingly in the style of what a well-informed human would write. One can easily imagine the problems that will arise as people assume that what it says is true or accurate, just because it is written well. But, that's its own huge topic.

BTW, when you point out that is has gotten something wrong, it apologizes and largely regurgitates any correction you gave it. I have also seen this with math questions I gave it to which it gave poor responses. I wonder if it is learning new information from the correction or if it is just placating the user.
