Extruding is the most simple thing we can do and most useful. It is what is used to make most of the models that you see in the Freedom Force games. It is also very useful in making things we see in images, like comic book art, into 3d models which will be covered in part 2.

We start with a 3d model be it a shape or plane. Here I have created a cylinder. Rather the program creates the cylinder and saves us from doing any work.

Next I select a desire face or faces.

I then extrude that face in a desired fixed direction. This creates another duplicate face connected to the original face as shown. This used for example to make fingers on a 3d model. And that is how extrusion is done.

Let's say we want to make a hollow object. Like a gun barrel or just a barrel? From this step we select the new face that we created during the last extrusion. Then we shrink it to create what will become the lip of the barrel.

We then extrude that face through the model itself. You can go all the way through if you want or not. For our model we will not see the bottom, the backface, so we want to stop inside.

That's it for extrusion. Since we will be importing this into a Nif for Freedom Force we want to map it. Cylinders are easy to map. First after assigning the texture we want to use.

Then we map it. We want to map any "sides" that will be visible in game. We want to think about the game itself and not how Character Tool displays it. Since it is a cylinder we want to start by mapping the length of it aka the tube.

Then we need to map the other visible face mentioned earlier aka the top face. This happens to be the inside of the barrel. We don't have to map it actually. In game it will be shaded. In fact the player won't ever see it at all. For the tutorial however we will because normally you would do this just to complete the 3d model.

Then we texture it of course using the wireframe we just created. And here we have an easy to make texture 3d model ready to be imported into our game be it for our character, FX or map object.
