What did you guys do to ips?

I am in no way condoning what he did but something had to happen to make him take such drastic measures. I am a person who always asks the why before I ridicule the action. When the planes hit the buildings on 9/11 my first question was what did the government do to make these people want to do this? This is huge, not just "getting back" at this community but legal action could be taken against many of you. He obviously was very wounded by something that had to happen between himself and others here. He always seemed like an intelligent and reasonable person and for him to do this, to take this kind of action, well it must have been something big. I understand that he was banned from this site, effectively "shutting him up" if the source of this mess was a personal debate between himself and others. That was probably the first mistake. When you take someone's platform away during a heated debate then you are building a fire that can and usually does get very very personal. Anyway, I hardly converse with most here on things like this, I mostly enjoy this community's work. This community was fantastic, it is sad to see it end like this.

I won't speak for the Admins and Titans, as they can explain their actions much better than I can, but I will say this: If you thought of him as a reasonable person, obviously you weren't paying very close attention.

I like and respected the guy, but he wasn't being reasonable in the entire debate.  He was nearly the only one that held his views, but he insisted he was right and was harassing the most vocal ones who disaggreed.  I don't know about the actual banning, but he certainly wasn't shut up and was given several weeks to outline all of his views in detail and it was well established that the rest of the community as a whole just didn't agree with him.  He took that rather personally.

Basically he thought that distributing a large number of meshes and skins together, even as part of a mod, was some kind of attack on artists.  Since the rest of the community didn't agree, that made the entire community a bunch of art-stealing copyright violators.  So he reacted to us as such--but trying to get us shut down as a bunch of virtual thieves, which in his mind, we are.

It really irks me to see people blame victims for the perpetrator's actions. Face it. There are just evil people in the world that will do evil things based on no reason at all or based on something they perceive as a threat to them.

Ha...if that ain't the truth.

Let me tell you something that I've pretty much kept secret in an effort to halt the spread of bad blood (an effort that seems rather superfluous now).  IPS antics during all that ugliness not only caused a stir on the boards, but they LITERALLY drove people away.  The most obvious and high profile is Tiobe, but there were at least four or so others that I know about.  These people weren't skinners, meshers, or anything else that would cause us to sit up and notice their absence, but they were part of this community, a part that is lost thanks to him, and thanks directly to him.

what is bpd?
it was about anger, and rudeness and baiting ppl.  the issues were secondary to simple politeness.
we shouldn't talk about him.  he can't defend himself here.

Zapow

ips didn't like our rules and didn't take well to efforts at moderation. Instead of taking moderation at face value he assigned malicious intent in order to absolve himself from any blame. We power mad Admins were always to blame.

We don't ban many people from FR. For the most part people get friendly reminders and then warnings if needed. Most people are mature and get the point. Sometimes people don't and they are give short suspensions. Rarely we find that we must ban people and that ban is dicussed and voted on by the Titans.

Bans can be lifted depending on attitude of the person banned.

ips is someone that at every point of moderation refused to learn or try to seek common ground. He refused to be an adult. He was here as a guest and we showed him the door for behaving badly. It's that simple.

Thanks, this clears up this whole mess. Wow, not much to say I guess. Now that I know the details. This sucks, I really have grown to love this community and hope it survives this mess.

catwhowalksbyhimself

Mind you it was a bit more complicated then that.  There was actually a compromise made which IPS agreed to, but he seems to have still resented the whole community for not siding with him in the first place.

In his mind, he is a victim, fighting for the side of righteousness and so forth.  People who do bad things usually think they are actually doing good.

Yup, bottom line is that this is a heavily moderated board, which does not mean I'm saying the mods are controlling, I mean it is the type of board it is. Boards like this are usually really successful in my opinion, with the ONLY drawbacks being the fact that any political, sexual or conflictive speech is instantly squashed. Big deal, I post on a cooking forum with a bunch of Grandmas and Chefs too, and if the chefs can behave so can I. Same here, If I want to talk about something particularly nasty, I'll take it elsewhere. IPS was a great guy, but he could not point the dots between breaking forum rules and being singled out.

Besides I like the forum, I know I can open up any thread without running into something from faces of death, suicide girls or something far worse at work.

catwhowalksbyhimself

Personally, my impression is that the mods and admins were far too indulgent with this, as I've been talked to for far less.

But perhaps he was talked to after all but refused to listen.  At least that's was some of the admin posts on this issue would make me think.

If that is true, the mods and admins were being very, very generous with waiting as long as they did.

What wrong with Suicide Girls?  I have some friends who model for that site!   :D  :P

As far as I am concerned, IPS's behavior doesn't surprise me (though it takes a LOT to surprise me) but it does sadden me that a member here who has been here as long as him would behave this way.  I have had some assorted disagreements with mods and admins here in the past but it's safe to say that I would never do something so foolish that it affects the entire community.

With that in mind, I have a lot more to say on this but will not given some of the rules here that would prevent some of the choice words I have.  I may have to post a blog on this later.

"WE" didn't do anything to him. This is probably not the time to try and rationalize why he did what he did, especially when it was malicious attack against the mods that only hurt the FF community.

Let's face it the guy was not just a Tool but, the whole the whole flipping Tool Box - It was on display a couple years back with the FX thing instead of working with me to remove his 2 fx I used from the pack he just wanted the whole thing taken down Forever & that's what we got - It's the same story here he didn't have 100% authority over whatever he wanted so the whole thing must be taken down & it seems again he's getting what he wants - So it seems that if IPS wins then we all fail & thats why he has been my arch nemesis these few years - He can't seem to realize the community aspect of the forum - We all pretty much know each other here & have full respect for others works of art & can tell each others work from a mile away - If someone was taking skins & meshes & posting them on a web site proclaiming that they made them then I can see why IPS would be mad but, no one has done that ever - No one is operating in the shadows & IPS shouldn't have written to the Provider hinting that that's whats going on with his stuff without his consint "He posted it" - Like we said before nothing IPS has done is hosted here - Just words & links that he posted - If IPS really cared about the community "which he doesn't" he would have just told the Mod's to remove his links & post's & i'm 100% sure the Mod's would have accomidated him & that would have been that but, he went the back stabbing route so thats what he is - If i saw him in an resturant I would spit in his drink when he wasn't looking - Anyway I don't want to waste anymore time flamming this loser & will be my last post doing so

P.S - one of IPS's lamest comments from years past was that his web site was quote "An Educational experience" - LoL how full of yourself can you be hoestly

electro don't make this about the fx pak because you know it wasn't just that that got you trouble with the board.

ok, breaking my rule of "strictly non-speaking membership"
i've watched this argument over the past few months, and i can't say that i'm surprised by the outcome, so that not why i'm posting.
i just have one question:
i've just read ips original mail, and he says that he's going to notify marvel/dc/everybody else that the meshing/skinning/modding community is breaking copyright law.
Is there ANY chance that any member here might get sued for there work? because i was pretty sure that it all fell under the "fanart tolerance" (meaning: if i do a drawing of batman and put it on my blog, i probably won't get sued for it)
So what's the deal with that? just a vengeful hopeless last act (to "teach" us a "lesson") or an real threat on this community?

Xenolith

Well, if that is his reasoning, he is sadly confused because he has created several Marvel and DC characters for this game and is just as "in the wrong" as anyone else.  I'm sure several of the community members are willing to provide examples at this point.

Trelau

"Furthermore, beyond my own work, this online community is a game modding community in which the members specialize in creating content which is primarily the intellectual property of Marvel Entertainment and DC Comics for use in the gaming environment. While I am not an authorized agent of either firm, it may be desirable to pursue having that community remove all content owned by those parties in advance, as I intend to notify those firms of this site, promptly, so that they may exercise their copyright as well."

That's from his mail. So i'm guessing he's confused.

I think his motivation was that if the majority of FF content posts were removed from this message board that folks would have no choice but to flock over to Freedom United.

Unfortunately that part of the complaint targets the community as whole and not really FR.

such a talented artist. i regret that he has opted for the scorched earth method, but i can't say that, after reading his posts, that i'm surprised.

oh, well. life's full of karma. we'll see what the future holds for this community, with or without content.

I'm guessing he doesn't like pierced and tattooed pseudo-goth\emo chicks?

I always thought IPS was a bit arrogant and a drama queen. I don't know what happened to lead to him being banned, as I wasn't around or reading the right forum area when it went down, but what he's done doesn't surprise me in the least.

Disclaimer: I use the term `drama queen' regardless of gender or sexuality for anyone who fits the bill, as `drama king' sounds lame.

i'm guessing captmorgan72 didn't mean it either, but it's just more catchy than "what kind of disagreement opposed ips and the community and how did thing became so bad that he resorted to what he did".
